High Gain External Antennas now available

Pointing has a 3rd one a medium sised about 30 -40 cm long. 7dBi the Yargi is the long one at 11dBi.

I have posted on some of the other threads of my problems in the evening. From 7-11. Bad latency and lots of packet loss, a technician will come and see me tomorrow. The odd thing is that in the mornings I get wonderfull latency and no packet loss, do you think it might be congestion problems in the evening?

I hope not that would be terrible considering the amount of money I spend on a router and antennae.

hi, two quick questions.
1. Where can i see what performance im actually getting? I only know of the little signal bar on my PC (i only get 2 at best) So whats this packetloss stuff?
2. because i only get 1-2 bars, i just want a longer antenna cable to stick up into my ceiling. where can i get such a thing?
 
It's a residential hill..i live on the side opposite the signal hence my 1-2 bars :), so it's 50m drive

but i could definately see the funny in me hiking up a hill with laptop in hand! :p

I wouldn't go all the way to the top of the hill. Although you may get a strong signal, you may pick a lot more towers than you want to and they share frequencies. So the other towers further away may appear as "noise" on the frequency of the tower you actually want to use.

Best is to drive to a tower in town and park about 50 m away from it, not right under it as the signal will mostly go over your head.

I can't think the losses can be so high on the cable. Will ask the engineers.

Just remember a 15dB gain, starting from a base of 0 will still be 0, so first make sure there is a signal to amplify.

Agree on the cable losses, but disagree on the last sentence.

Antenna gain is not the same as amplifier gain. An amplifier takes a signal that needs to be already above the noise floor and amplifies the signal but not the noise. The amp does add a bit of noise due to its own heat and everything, but does not amplify the noise.
Antenna gain means the antenna is more sensitive to signals coming from a specific direction and can effectively lift a signal from below the noise floor to above the noise floor. So you can start with "zero" and end up with a useable signal. The problem is, you wouldn't know how "zero" your signal is before testing with the antenna.

I would spend some money to get really low loss cable. The cable can nullify anything you've "gained" :) in the antenna
 
is there a wirless solution to this, I have a wireless data card in my laptop and would not like to be confined to one point, it seems a bit pointless to be tied into a fixed point otherwise you could go and get ADSL and have 4Mbps

Do you mean you are at home for example and would like to be able to use your laptop with HSDPA anywhere in the house without plugging in an antenna?
Then you need a wireless HSDPA router that can use an external antenna. V3g can comment on this.

I asked ic and rpm a while ago if I can post relevant attachments and they graciously gave me a (very limited) capability. I can only post a jpeg of max 19K!

I think the 11dBi is around R900 and the 7dBi about R500, but best to ask Poynting.

Looking for HSDPA/3G Hi Gain Antenna in Cape Town

Hi all, good to be able to get some expert opinion on these issues. I live in a bandwidth blackhole in Plumtead Cape Town and my last resort is trying out one of these antennas with my Hauwei usb modem. I use both voda & mtn and get bad reception on both, sometimes non existant. Anyone got one of these antennas to sell in Cape Town?

I just don't want to order from joburg to find it doesn't make any difference.

The good news is that Vodacom now offer both the 11db yagi antenna and the 7db external antenna as stock items on their price lists, with both 5 metre and 10 metre extension options... So you can get them at any Vodashop or approved dealership, you don't have to go directly to the manufacturers anymore.

Good idea to get it installed by someone in the know though, as pointing the antenna a few degrees in the wrong direction can mean a bar or 2 of signal strength.:cool:

I have sucky reception at my house... I have ADSL, so I only want to be able to speak to some customers without sucky call quality. Which antenna do you recommend only for voice?

Spend the money, get the high-gain antenna and never look back again - works like charm espeically where you have bad (or even no) signal!

I don't want to plug it into my cellphone... I'd like an external aerial (i.e. one I can put on the roof) and an internal one for retransmission... I'm not the only one going to use it.
Repeater must be installed by the network operator, as you are not authorised to retransmit on these frequencies.

Typical solution is 3G WiFi router. But if you want to make voice calls from handsets, it is not a solution.

Interesting would be to hear about project involving VOIP from the handset to the router and router initiating normal CSD call (some modems are capable using CSD calls, they even have voice drivers for Windows).
 
You could use something like a Huawei B970 which has a connector for an external antenna as well as a RJ11 port for a phone (cordless if you like). You could set it up with a twin SIM so in the evening when you get home you switch it on to override your cellphone and when you go out switch it off again to get calls on your cellphone.

I don't think he's speaking of a repeater - this sounds more like a back-to-back antenna system. That can work, but he opens himself up to multipath nightmares, depending on the signal strength inside his house. Also, omni antennas are, well, omni - which means that their front-to-back isolation is virtually ... do they even have something like that!?

I know the basic theory behind directional back-to-back antennas, but not with omnis. Both antennas are going to pick up the handset's signal. What will that do - nothing?, strange self-resonance?, brilliant performance? Alas, I'm at a lost here.

Aww... that's too bad. Prolly costs an Babe Ruth arm and a Mariah Carey leg too. How willing are operators to do this at a private residence/home office?

Some were successful getting repater installed in their homes.

I have another crazy idea. Place you handset inside satelite dish and using Bluetooth you can make calls. The same for Internet to PC. Before getting 3G modem I was using Bluetooth between handset and PC and dialing Internet from PC. New handsets allow do the same over WiFi connection.
