Since about 2 weeks ago I've been having volatile latency (ranges from 30-250 testing to Cape Town) and some packet loss but my download/upload speeds are perfectly fine which led me to believe that there was no exchange congestion which was confirmed by telkom. They also switched the dslam my line was plugged into to another dslam with less usage. I've also tried switching routers, testing on another computer, trying with another ISP account and switching the DSL cable connected to the router but all to no avail. Telkom technician said he didn't know what was causing the high pings. Do you guys have any idea as to why this would happen. Thanks in advance

Where are you ??
Down load ping plotter then you can see where the high ping is coming from .( the free version )
http://www.pingplotter.com/

I was having the same problem for about a week but my problem has gone away now .

Do a traceroute and see what the results are on the first hop from router out.
You could have a congested exchange, but it still seems moderate.
I get 600ms to 1000ms pings/traceroute.
It shouldn't really be above 10ms...

Thanks for your advice, I stay in Parktown North.
These are 2 traces that I did right after each other to telkom.co.za

Looks like you may have another problem. I'd suggest some diagnostic tools. Let me find that thread.

FYI, congested exchange looks like:

traceroute to telkom.co.za (196.43.22.222), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
1 login.router (10.0.0.2) 3.391 ms 1.656 ms 1.550 ms
2 41-133-138-1.dsl.mweb.co.za (41.133.138.1) 795.397 ms 782.875 ms 764.268 ms
3 197-84-96-138.cpt.mweb.co.za (197.84.96.138) 855.352 ms 898.759 ms 977.760 ms
^C
(Begins to timeout completely after this)...

I will look for those tools (Somewhere in mybb threads) and link you up.

Telkom was fine the weekend, but now they broken again and giving 300 ms to local sites again.
