When I first received my ADSL line last year Feb I was getting a ping of around 30(45ms)->40(50ms), but for the last 2 months it has doubled to 80(110ms) ping. I thought it was my DSL line but then after talking to about 20 other gamers I found that they all had the same problem. What I also found is that all the gamers with the problem are being directed through the same IP.

The Saix servers that I connect to are located in Pretoria, Im located in Edenvale JHB. Players in Capetown are getting low pings of 30 while im getting pings of 80 and I'm completely sick of it!

When doing a tracert I found that this IP: tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za was getting a ping of 80 while the others get a ping of around 20.

All the players effected by the high pings are also going through this IP.

My Details:
ISP: Telkom
LINE: DSL384k
Location: Edenvale JHB

Tracert:

Target Name: tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za

Packets: Sent = 8, Received = 8, Lost = 0 (0.0%)
Round Trip Times: Minimum = 64ms, Maximum = 67ms, Average = 65ms

What I'm asking for any of you is what can I do to get my ping back to what it was. I'm sick of playing verse players who have DSL 192 and pings of 20 and loosing simply coz my ping is worse.

I Have phoned telkom several times but they just tell me that there is nothing wrong and that there is nothing they can do. They told me to do a speed test and then they said that my dl is fine. But the problem ain't my Downloading, its my latency.

What should I say when I phone them again? I'm not sure how to speak to them about this as I'm not as technical as the others.

Plz help me out.

Kind regards
Infy

Anything sub 100ms is fine for FPS games, strat games like age of empires can handle lag into the 1000s.

So 80 is not really anything to worry about.

But if i had to guess it would be increased traffic in your area over time increasing latency.

And quiet frankly telkom is not going to change anything for 40ms increase in ping times.

well are you with saix or IS

what game are you playing

info like this is vital to pin pointing your problem

I play Counter-strike, so 40 ping mades a massive differnce as its normaly that 50ms which decides life or death. People kill me before I even see them.

My ISP is telkom internet

inferno, doublecheck with telkom or check on your router that your on fast-path and not interleave.

A while back telkom changed everyone to interleave and then back to fast-path, makes a huge difference with regards to latency. You may still be on interleave?

I have the standard telkom pots router, I went through the settings but i couldnt find anything like "Fast-path" or "interleave".

Ill phone telkom tomoz and see what they say.

yep i have, i have no extra prossesses in the backround, i even close skype when i play.

do me a favour

ping myadsl.co.za
ping games.saix.net

what server are you playing because it might be the server not telkom

Don't know how much the telkom pots router has changed in recent years but on mine you can check if its on interleave under: monitor--> ADSL status --> Data rate information.

I am on a standard SAIX line and get about 600-900ms ping playing US WoW. I have done raids, instances and normal play, there is no problem.

Your problem however occurs when there is packet loss.

You would much rather have high latency with 0 packet loss then low latency with high packet loss.

As a gamer, I can tell you straight away that your first HOP of 27ms is what's causing your main problems for gaming.
It's clear that you're dialing up from your PC - so my natural assumption is that you're using XP's dial-up feature.

Now, my recommendations are:
Firstly, make sure you have an ethernet router and not a USB one. USB adds horrible latency for gaming.
If you have an ethernet router, download and install RASPPPoE (http://www.raspppoe.com/), and then create and a dial-up account for that instead, replacing your XP counterpart. It's a dsl protocol that (by my experience) is far superior to XP's own. My first-hop latency on an saix shaped account (to 165.146.64.1 being in rosebank) dropped from 25ms avg to about 9-10ms avg.

Thnx frag, I installed it but i see no differnce. Some random days my ping is great! The last time it was great I did a tracert and found that the IP: tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.10.86] was getting a lovely 30 ping instead of a 60 ping. So im pretty sure its that exchange that is lagging me and the others that pass through it.

@ killadoob: I did a tracert to myadsl.co.za and saix.net and found that saix was the same speed. Myadsl went through more hops though.

dont worry inferno. i live in centurion(pierre van ryneveld) in my latency is always 80(with SAIX account on sgs gaming server). When i got my dsl it was also 50. My friend living in moreleta park (its about 10 kilometers away) latency in counter-strike is 12!!!!!!!! mine is 80!!! its sucks, if any1 can tell us what to do to fix this plz do. I am sure telskum is not going to be worried by users complayning(jammer) about high latency if it is under 100 ms

Inferno, what is your latency on an international server? I have isdn. Is there good latency on south african servers?

Ive been having EXACTLY the same problem..

I get 60-80 ping to saix servers on most days, some 30 on less frequently other days.

BUT! I get 30 ping to saix when I use a UUNET account whereas the former is a saix account. Thats when I disconnect and dial back up again.

Very weird, definitely sounds like a saix problem

tracert this IP: tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za and tell me what ms you guys are getting plz.
