High Pings on 384k Line

Hi All

I have a 384k line which we have had for years and i used to play a lot of games online with decent pings of around 60.

Lately my pings are between 200 and 300.

I have formatted my pc. tried other pcs this doesnt seem to be the problem.

I have phoned telkom to complain the technician just says if you want a faster line you have to pay more. they have no idea of what im talking about.
Im so frustrated at the mo!

any help on what might be the issue or who i can talk to would be a great help!

Do a tracert and paste it here, then people will be able to help you better :)

If you ask me you were downloading while doing the trace route and ping tests...
Another thing: how much have you downloaded/uploaded this month already on your IS connection? Because IS is shaping the top 20% users in their 384/512kbps ADSL category.

You should be able to see how much is being downloaded/uploaded in the PPPoE connection's status window - I'm guessing that you're dialing the PPPoE connection from your PC, seeing as the trace route showed your public IP address.
 
I wasnt downloading anyting. Thats what i thought in the beginning, perhaps i had a virus or something that was downloading data. Im not on any uncapped. its a Afrihost R29 a gig account that i buy, and this is the first time this month that i have actualy used this account. I run a Network monitor to check how much data is passing through. When i started the tracert i made sure that there was nothing being downloaded.
I dont know that extra bit infor helps.

Let me guess, you are using either M-Web / Afrihost / Openweb or another IS reseller?

It's possible but with the recent Telkom upgrades, a lot of exchanges are reporting the same high pings. It may be a Telkom-only issue.
I had the same low pings until fairly recently. Now Telkom doesn't respond or acknowledge there is a problem at all.

400ms doesn't make me a better gamer, that's for sure!!
 
@ Zero Cool - Yup I am using an afrihost account. But in saying that I also have a telkom account that is my mums and i get the same issues with that account.

Yeah telkom's call center peeps have no idea of pings in games. The technicians cant even connect a router to a phone line with out stuffing it up!
Wish there was someone who could sort the problem out.
 
I've got the same problem. I'm on a 384k line with telkom. I used to get around 50ms ping now look what I get.


Tried calling ISP telkom and they don't even know what ping is...nuff said.

I'm actually considering upgrading my line because this is BS.

Maybe I'm in the top 20% because I've downloaded 12 gigs already trying to get my damn steam updates to finish and still have a spare 9 gigs but the shaping thing doesn't make sense to me. I thought shaping affected your line speed not your ping. I mean I can still download at 39kB/s it's just when I try and play tf2 I suck because I'm getting an average of 200ms.
 
i don't understand this whole 'ping' thing so lekka... , a couple of weeks ago i wrote to Vodacom (my ISP) that playing online games or downloading blu-ray content on my PS3 take very long, only then i was made aware of latency and ping. I filled in a application form to have my access point made '' unrestricted '', this will most likely bring the ping down. Needless to say when i did a speed test the ping had dropped from around 142ms to 112ms. The PS3 side of things still takes forever, my connection is good and stable but suffers with HD content, because with the same connection on my Mac, downloading songs or browsing the net opens up very quick.

This leads me to another question, when i do a speed test on Speed.vodacom.co.za, it shows ping at around 128ms, but when i do a test from Speedtest.net the ping shows around 1074ms with a average rating of 'C' for my ISP.

Modem in use - Vodafone Huawei USB E272 3.6mb/s and Billion BiPac 7402GX 3G/ADSL 2+ Wireless Router

First of a definition of Ping/latency.

Latency is the amount of time it takes for a packet of information to be sent from your pc, reach the server and then be recieved by your pc. So it's basically the time it takes for information to be sent and recieved.

One thing to do is to get off wireless. If you can, specifically for the ps3. Wireless makes latency like no ones business. Regardless of how awesome your wireless modem and reciever are it will always be worse than wired. Again if you can go for wired.

If you are just using the internet to surf the web and watch videos etc then ping shouldn't really affect you. Ping only really comes into effect when you play online, specifically fps games, and things like skype or voip. However for the ps3 and blu-ray I would go with a wired connection and that should sort out your problem. If not you will have to get a faster line. Although being a ps3 owner myself with a decent blu-ray collection my 384k line is fine for blu-ray live but thats using a wired connection.

So what you are saying is basically Telkom can no longer handle the volume of information due to capless accounts and specifically the new patches etc. hmmm hopefully telkom will start upgrading their s*** to handle capless and the country can take a technological leap forward but what will seem more likely is that telkom will call for a ban of capless internet or mweb and we will all go back to the dark ages.

This is to anyone. Would upgrading my line to 4mb make a significant difference to my ping? Enough to justify the monthly cost? Oh and also how do you know which 4mb lines telkom is upgrading?
 
No, upgrading wouldn't help. I'm on 6 meg and my ping is also screwed during peak hours.

I have the exact same ping problems as everyone else atm, even people with slower lines.
 
Mick, we are talking about the fact that ADSL is screwed in Cape Town atm and he is wondering if upgrading will fix the problem.

Under normal circumstances, yes your ping will drop. When I upgraded from 384k to 6 meg, my local pings went from 80ish to 20ish.

Sorry Zolly I was slightly off topic and responded to the above question.

BTW has the OP confirmed they are in Cape Town?
