I've tried to download a 1 gig file via http and ftp last night (1st) and could not reach download speeds above 50kb/s using WA shaped and unshaped pre-paid (4mb adsl) This was across various download sites btw.
Any idea why this would be? I would have thought that unshaped at least should give full speed. If not, why pay for more than a 384 connection :(

50KB/s would be 512K ;)

I dont think its the ISP which is preventing you from downloading at your full 4Mb/s its probably Telkom.
What is the fastest download speed you have gotten out of your 4Mb line?

Do you use a download manager? I find that multi-threaded downloads will typically max out my connection.

i recommend Internet Download Manager..

www.internetdownloadmanager.com

been using it for a while now..does wonders

if i save target as from internet explorer i get about 30 kbps max depending on the site, whereas if i use this download manager, i get +-400Kbps

really does work for me no joke..

Gathu, you should be getting almost 500Kbs download speeds. Try a download application like "mxit fan" mentioned, but IDM that he mentioned isn't free, for something free you could try either,

http://www.orbitdownloader.com/
http://www.flashget.com/index_en.htm

Then download something from a fast server like (ftp://ftp.saix.net/pub3/OpenOffice.org/stable/2.2.1/OOo_2.2.1_src_binfilter.tar.bz2) and watch the speed you get.

You could also try some speedtests from here (http://mybroadband.co.za/myadsl/speedtest.php) always try to choose one thats closest to you.

If you have a 4Mb line (and ISP account) and can only download at 50Kb you need to complain to your ISP first and see what they say (you may also need to complain to Telkom), if they don't sort it out then compain to both ICASA and the ASA
