History at schools will become Afrocentric

Cape Town - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has announced sweeping changes to the teaching of history as a school subject, saying it would be Afrocentric and not based on European history.

She said a task team had been set up to deal with the matter and government would launch the programme on May 25, which is Africa Day.

Motshekga, who made the announcement during her budget vote in Parliament, said the programme would be phased in over seven years as money became available.

“There should be a lot of engagement and the festival of ideas where we rewrite the history books. We see it as a seven-year project to give us a chance to talk. It helps to have identity,” said Motshekga.

Well personally I was surprised how far back places like East Africa and West Africa have had civilisation, as far as Southern African apart from the blip of Greater Zimbabwe history really only starts around the colonial era.
 
I would like to see history go planetary, planetary wide that is.

Time to stop venerating regional crap because your forefathers had a plot of land there (this only leads to power hungry people in power having propaganda tools to achieve their own ends) Time to start venerating human achievement and learning of the failures we should never repeat again.

Right wingers seem very triggered by Wakanda. We all know it doesn't actually exist, but man is it brought up a lot around here.

I have not even watched it yet but noticed this comes up frequently.
I will have to watch it this weekend just to get the reference. but more importantly, I HAVE NOT WATCHED IT YET! :(
 
I will support to update the syllabus by bringing in more historical context applying to this continent than removing the ‘European’ narrative which is essential to the historical building blocks.

they are edged on by decolonisation... Rewrite is more than a strong word, it is an alteration.
 
Haha this is going to be awesome. Heh. To me, Wakanda is what a bunch of PC americans think Africa could have been if left to their own devices. They're probably right though - a patriarchal society bound to outdated cultural holdovers, completely insular and unwilling to uplift their neighbours...?
Or alternatively an indictment on Africa in that only the miraculous landing of a meteorite could cause them to actually develop technologies...?
