Hogan says PBMR plug has been pulled

Well somewhere in their last anual report they were audited by some extrnal auditor from england to try and place a "ip value" on the company. I'm not quite sure how you could actually determine this (or how biased it is) but the result was that pbmr is worth something like R20billion. I.e. that's what it would roughly cost a extrenal investors to buy up the IP and people. Ofc it's worth nothing now hehe.
 
Intellectual property evaluation figures and explanations of those values would be fascinating. Do you know if that company made details of their findings public? I would really be interested to see them.
 
No I'm not sure. I just know it stands somewhere in the last pbmr anual report. Look it's a figure I can believe. 800 technicians/engineers/scientists with a spesific skills set are generally worth a lot of money.
 
Putting an IP value on the company is valid and is a good tool for the government to use in order to justify the funding. What I want to know is, now that the project has been canned, who does that IP value sit with? The individuals that collectively make up the knowledge factor of the IP value have to now go their own seperate ways and, I doubt, are in any way obligated to stay in South Africa. They may, however, be obligated under contract not to share that knowledge with interested companies or individuals abroad but, then again, can take that knowledge with them to their respective graves. Which makes it impossible, in my opinion, to use the IP value as justification.

I used to be a pro PBMR guy, but I'm actually glad they pulled the plug here. It was just taking too long, and unfortunately without significant interest from other countries....so it was unfeasible. Its a little sad coz the PBMR was a novel design/concept.

Nuclear power is the way to go though, but there are better ways of doing it.
Wind sucks, solar sucks, coal sucks, etc etc.

The IP still belongs to RSA. PBMR will be the IP of the 10 odd people that will manage this "care and maintanace" mode. The rumour is that the "pty ltd" needs to keep on operating. Because should the pty ltd cease to exit, all IP rolls over to Westinghouse (this was part of the deal when Westinghouse signed up).

You are quite right though. Real IP rests in someones brain. The paper work is nothing without the guy who produced it. So as it stands now, PBMR is probably only worth the paper it has in it's vaults.

The chinese also have a pebble bed project. I don't think anything stops a pbmr engineer to go and work there and share his knowledge.

Great. Thank you very much for your post. It makes sense to me. I will, without a doubt, continue to educate myself further with regards to this topic in order to form a more knowledgeable opinion. If what you say is true, then it is not money wasted at all. It is a wealth of knowledge that we will have to tap into more and more as it appears to be the best way forward for many reasons.
 
Was there not also a Canadian PBMR concept?

Initiation of pre-licensing initiatives in the US and Canada to prepare for early projects

In South Africa and elsewhere, application studies have confirmed the potential for integrating the PBMR into process plants to meet process steam and electricity demands. In Canada, there is interest from the oil sands industry in using the PBMR to produce steam at the temperature and associated pressures needed for “in-situ” applications to extract bitumen from oil sands displacing intended gas-fired plants that are currently used.

Didn't really see much else with regards to Canadian involvement.
