Whether there was a much better casting choice or the actor simply did not fit the role they were cast in, what are Hollywood's biggest casting mistakes?

Two that fortunately got fixed Eric Stoltz in back to the future. Refused to see the script as a comedy and acted deliberately against the script and director continually taking it in a much more serious direction. After 5 weeks of filming on the first movie the entire cast and crew hated him and where at odds. Director fired him, hired Michael J Fox, and had to reshoot all the already shot footage. Fox was still busy on another show and had to film after hours essentially for a lot of it and as such was getting almost no sleep. The slightly dazed and tired look he continually had fitted the role perfectly however.

Next one was Stuart Townsend as Aragorn in the LOTR movies. Also did not take it seriously, missed out on a lot of the practice, disrespected the whole cast, director etc in a few ways. Got fired just before filming was set to begin. Viggo Mortensen was cast as his replacement last minute and nailed it. Arrived with zero prep work, no sword practice, and had to shoot the weathertop fight scene on his first day. The rest is history.

Thinking hard about this as sometimes it's a bad script more than a miscasting. The two I know a lot of people disliked from the comic book world would be:

1. Toby McGuire as Spiderman. Again, I thought he did a good job but most fans of the comics disliked it as Spiderman is typically an upbeat quippy character and Toby McQuire played a real sad sack kind of spiderman role.

2. Jason Mamoa as Aquaman: Both in looks and personality the dark brooding aquaman is far from the blond clean cut comic book character.

Hayden Christensen in Star Wars.

In his defence - and the entirety of the prequel cast -, George Lucas cannot write dialogue for sh*t. Lucas is a world builder and ideas man, but he cannot write a script to save his life.

IMO, Hayden was a lot better in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka. Granted, limited screen time, but when he did appear he was solid. I personally feel that he shines when he has to portray the dark side of Anakin.

Thank you, Stuart Townsend, for being such a collossial douche-nozzle.

George Lazenby and Roger Moore in their turns as James Bond... George Clooney as Batman... Everybody in the Matrix 4. Ezra Miller as the Flash. Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Adam Driver in the Star Wars sequels.

Colin Farrell - Alexander
Joaquin Phoenix - Napoleon (Maybe the movie itself didn't cut it)
Sonequa Martin-Green - as Michael Burnham in Star Trek Discovery (Great Series, was ruined by the overwhelming part of Michael Burnham)
Robert De Zero - Ever since he caught T D S
Alan Ritchson - Ever since he caught T D S
Clooney - Ever since he caught T D S
Sean Penn - Ever since he went to Ukraine for USAID money

A poll of great casting decisions would be a better idea.

Doesn't Clooney himself even regret doing Batman?

No idea why they didn't use Grant Gustin as the movie Flash. In hinsdight, it would have also saved the film seeing as Miller went completely off the rails and sabotaged the film with his off-screen antics.
