So I intend cancelling my Alarm subscription but keeping the equipment. The only thing the alarm company will remove is the radio. Has anyone tried or are there any projects that can link the system perhaps with a sim card so that when triggered it can send an SMS? Raspberry PI perhaps?

Which alarm system do you have?

If you have DSC or Paradox system you can get an IP module, hook it up to your internet connection (fibre would be best) and you can get full remote control of you alarm system as well as notifications for all events. I have this setup with my DSC system.

I am sure there are GSM modules which can be used but then you need a simcard with airtime which is a bit of a pain.

Hmm, interesting, I have a DSC system but it is an older one, I wonder if you get an IP module for this, will have to research it.

Only problem with the DSC internet module (HYYP) is that you do not control your alarm directly. All comms are routed via an external server managed by DSC so if your internet connection is down, the phone app is useless. I think the newer firmware for the Paradox systems (IP150?) is doing the same - no more direct control.

That DSC IP Module sounds very interesting...so definitely keen to follow

Yes, that is how I understand it works, we have a Paradox system with the IP150 module using the Insite Gold app.

The DSC IP module is the Envisalink EVL-4 and it works through the EYEZ ON mobile app and web interface.

Yes, if you lose internet at home then you no longer have control over your alarm but as soon as you lose internet connection you get a notification on the app and (if you set it up) an email informing you that the IP module has lost connection. This isn't a massive issue for me because I have fibre (which has amazing availability) and I have a UPS running my routers/CPE so I seldomly find myself in this situation, and even if I do when I get home I just manually disarm my alarm and carry on like normal.

The DSC IP module is the single best item I have purchased for my alarm system, the amount of control you have as well as the amount of event information it logs and stores is really amazing. Life changing even.

The Envisalink module is compatible with the following panels:

PC1555 / PC1555 MX
PC1575
PC5010 (Power832)
PC5020 (Power864)
PC1616
PC1832
PC1864

In order to see which version you have you need to look at the alarm panel (circuit board) there should be a little green sticker with the panel model number on it and you won't be able to connect to it.

Good luck.

PS. When setting up the IP module don't forget to disable DHCP otherwise if you do lose power for whatever reason the IP address on the module will keep changing.

If you have experience with Arduino there is code for controlling a DSC alarm on Github. Cheaper than the IP module.

I seem to have the Power864, any idea where to get the Envisalink EVL-4 ?

Ok, Alarmtec were a bit expensive, so I got the Envisalink 4 from Amazon.com for half the price, and installed it on my DSC Power864.

All that I can say is that it is absolutely amazing, I now have full control over the alarm from anywhere, and can see exactly what is going on at all times.

Very, very impressed.
