Hi Guys,
I am curious to find out if anyone here has done/attempted this? or if not, have you planned to?
interested to find out what hardware you used and what software solutions you came up with.

Hi Guys Interesting Topic

I just stumbled on this thread.
Ok where to start.
I am working an a Home automation system at the moment using Arduino's and hopefully RaspBerry Pi(I managed to get two).
I am trying to develop a commercially viable product that are affordable and reliable. The only problem with the Pi's are the availability and a reliable and affordable supply.
Back to the Pi as a Automation system? It is defiantly a viable Solution but will need to work in conjunction with other systems.I have been working in the home automation field for the last couple of years and haven't found an commercial system that really offers what I want and is value for money.I wanted to develop something for years now, and only in the last year or so did everything come together to enable someone to develop a affordable alternative. Now that the RaspBerry Pi and the Arduino with all the tablet technology's are available at affordable prices you can build an automation system that rivals and exceeds most of the commercial automation systems available today?
What are your interest in Home Automation?
Now the Question is what are your idea of what Home Automation is?
What do you want to control?
Your other question is what software do you use. There are various software solutions available, Most commercial.
Openremote looks promising but most work seems to be done on the commercial side and lack a lot of documentation. It will run off a Raspberry and you can use your tablet to co control stuff but you do need a controller to complete the setup.
In my case work is still in progress and I am busy finalizing my controller first. So there are numerous programs that will be able to talk to it and it will in turn be able to talk to most most protocols.
In my case I see the function for the Raspberry as multiple systems.Pabx/ CCTV / Intercom / Access controll /mediacenters/..ext.
