Specifically the Pi version of it.

I would imagine the version you run in Docker wouldn’t have any issues as likely you wouldn’t be running dockers inside Docker inside Docker and use them directly on your platform.

But simple stuff like getting to the shell of a Docker to map network volume to it required so many loop holes I just gave up.

Setting up subdomains for Letsencrypt/Nginx also proved problematic as you can’t access the Docker directly.

If you need to hack something to make it work then it’s not the right tool for the job.

There’s just not enough simple access to the core system and the way it operates.
Ah ok that makes sense.
Containers inside containers are too many levels I agree.

On the supervisor setup it works greats.
Containers directly on the OS.

You running the Supervisor natively? Or you mean that’s a Docker and your other containers are outside of it?

Only use store components inside the supervisor then?

Hmm I havent really installed addons, but the HA stuff is along side it, not inside it.

Just checked now, the addon from the supervisor runs its own docker directly on the OS.

Code:
root@trex:/data/docker/hassio/homeassistant# docker ps
CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES
015ae4ef6894        hassioaddons/bitwarden-amd64:0.6.2               "/init"                  8 seconds ago       Up 3 seconds        0.0.0.0:7277->7277/tcp                                             addon_a0d7b954_bitwarden
1c2ccbdad92f homeassistant/qemux86-64-homeassistant:0.111.2 "/init" 3 days ago Up 16 hours homeassistant

Yeah the Hass.io version does much the same except it appears other dockers (Addons) either run inside that main one or are somehow obscured from the OS at least in Portainer.

And then if you try SSH it takes you to the Hass.io Docker not the root OS so that doesn’t help any which way either.

Maybe I missed something somewhere but all in all I very quickly realised migrating would be far more work and entirely unnecessary over the way I have it already perfectly setup now.

The Pi can become a retro game station instead.

I switched from Docker based HA to Hass.io in a VM on my unraid box. Works great for me.

What’s the benefit of that?

Seems like a waster of resources to achieve the same thing?

They have the supervisor as a Docker now anyway.

Does one then run supervisor along with home assistant container?

For me docker makes redeployment and updating easier and safer... easier to roll back and test multiple versions simultaneously

i guess, but i mean this isn't some outrageous multi dev platform, occasional back ups or a github to your yaml files seems easier

Nah as far as I understand it the Supervisor is basically the same as Hass.io on the metal with a Pi etc.

So Hass.io and some other small docker containers run inside the bigger one.

It all seems a bit silly and unnecessary over straight up HA.

Doesn't make sense that they would do docker on docker on hassio on the pi.

That said maybe manual docker is just easier for you.

I use docker at work, so makes it fun to tinker with it at home... albeit for no real benefit other than trying to sound cool by making my configuration sound clever :giggle:

i already have dimmable led downlights lights in my ceiling. one is operated by a rotating wall switch, the other by a normal switch, the longer you hold it down, the more the lights dim / brighten. What sort of device can I use to turn these into smart lights?

I then have some non dimmable led lights. how can i easily automate these?

Either way, you replace the switch with a smart dimmable switch.
I mostly like the Shelly Dimmer. It will work the same as the switch that you hold down to change the lights dim level. You need that switch, coupled with the Shelly Dimmer. The one you turn will have to be replaced. You will also need a neutral at your light switch in the wall.
