Voice is an issue unless the cam does 2 way audio
ah yes... maybe do a half arsed solution of still having the old intercom in the house - but at least when I'm not home I can see someone rang my doorbell and I can keep an eye? Kind of useful... kind of.

My old intercom is broken so looking for a good solution with voice. That stays off the cloud.

Can probably use the old BPT face/shell/buttons and put a pi zero with mic and speaker behind it. Power it with the gate.

Other thing to consider is that burglars will often first ring your doorbell before breaking into your house... so there's a security side to it too.

I was thinking to just use a IP cam at the front gate with a button that sends a push notification over home assistant.

It may just be quicker to notify me than these fancy expensive doorbells, and I'll have local storage of the footage.
Yep cheapy wireless bell plus camera with 2 way audio eg wyze. Plus expecting a outdoor wyze camera.

Edit

Think the Wyze outdoor cam should be released soon. Pity no streaming on google nest hub.

Maybe get an Alexa device just for streaming video doorbell

Interesting YT channel about HA by a fellow South African. Don't know the guy, but always good to support local. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR_eJdL5P6SVJ2n0kTCjlg

Nice!

That being said (not having seen the channel) I think it’s a silly notion to support local just because it’s local if in fact it can be mediocre/inferior.

Especially on the digital stage where location doesn’t matter.

Wow... love his video on telegram setup.
Think I'm going to implement that for sure.

Like the idea of if my alarm is triggered it can send me still images of all my cameras. Or reminding me ever few minutes that the iron is on, etc...

I already have the camera notification setup for my front beam. People even mock me now and say HA sends me cat pics.

But yeah sending an image is epic, makes it so much easier to know what is going on.

I kinda want to do the same when someone trigger the door bell/intercom. Not sure how I will do that yet but it will be brilliant.

Only difference is, I used Slack. See: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/home-automation-smartkit.909279/post-25561479

True, but "mediocre" can turn into something brilliant with a bit of support.

PS. The channel is not mediocre at all.

Do you use Slack to chat to people in the household?
