My challenge for the weekend. Soldering on these...

Hate soldering with a passion :p

I'm meant to solder led lights - been putting it off for a month.
 
Well as it turns out, I have a good solder iron. It's a Weller pu1 with tcp1 gun. But I need to buy smaller or finer tips for it. So while it is old, it can work.
So until then.

I have this pet door I am controlling via home assistant. The big problem is the company {sure pet} have no clue on how to have a reliable cloud service. 9 out of 10 times starting home assistant the integration fail. Also, sending a command is delayed by 30 to 90 seconds.

So building my own hub to replace the proprietary hub with one doing local control.

Another guy already did all the reverse engineering. So I just need to build this together and flash source code from github on.

He made it work with the original hub after I ordered the components and the pcb print. So now I don't actually need to this build this out anymore, but since I have it...why not.

Armed response need a keybus to connect their wireless radio to, this is something you will find on all Paradox/DSC etc systems, where the keypad connects with a wire to the main control board.

You either have those cheap systems with no armed response, or you go with a proper system to get armed response.

My advice is, call up your favorite armed response company and ask them to do a quote for you on their cheapest wireless alarm system with the above things you want.

Personally, I have a bunch of pirs, door sensors etc, and none of them are useful to me. Most of my early warning is done from the outside beams, where a single beam costs R2k+ before even adding the wireless transmitter.

If security with armed response is important to you, there is unfortunately no cheap shortcut that I know off.
Armed response starts at R500+ a month...(and thats cheap). Not sure why you would want a R2k system with that.

If you really must, go with ADT (I hate them) and get one of their rented alarm systems, which stays their property, but you will have no upfront cost. Or you can opt for a pay per month model where it pays it off over 4 years or something.

Don't cheap out. Get a system and then find a way to have the app on your phone.

So I got a quote from my local alarm monitoring company.
They quoted my around R7.5k for an mg5050 wireless system with 3 door contacts and 3 PIR.This system is compatible with wireless sensors but those 6 sensors will be hardwired initially.The radio transmitter remains theirs because im going with them as armed response. What are your thoughts on this?

I am not familiar with Paradox myself, maybe others can comment, but that looks like a decent control panel.

Up to 32 zones and any of them can be wireless, supports a bunch of other decent stuff.

It is normal that the radio that communicates with the armed response stays their property. If you change from one to another company, old company take their radio back and new company will install their own radio.

As for the pricing, would need to know the exact stuff they add on top of the control panel. Also, they will spend at least a full day installing most of the stuff.

So control panel, but how many remotes, which keypad do they add. You need to add a siren and a bunch of cabling. It will also include a battery for backup power. Then add the box that they install it in to as well. All of this adds up so the price doesn't seem absurd to me. I cant figure out if the ac to dc adapter for power is included with the control panel.
Do they add a led indication light at the front of the house that show from outside if the alarm is armed or not?

But yeah, 6 sensors is a very small system.

Also check the contract you sign, does it include a free support on the install for at least 12 months? That allows you to get them in to fix issues if any at no extra cost if lets say down the line, 3 months or even 9 months, there an issue they come and just fix it.

So the system is complete -metal box,siren,battery,2 x remotes all incl.I have 4 doors in my house,only choosing to cover 3, all windows have burglar bars so none on windows, then 3 pirs for common areas.THanks, I will check what support they have.
 
You won't go wrong with Paradox - Of you also install an IP150, then u have app access . However , their cloud based app while functional is dogshit and slow (same experienced by many of my family members who have the same alarms - could be an Android thing) - yes there's a subscription but not ridiculously expensive over a years.

Some of us connected our paradox alarms to our home automation systems and while I have the paradox insite gold app, never use it. My home assistant app does a much better job of Arming and disarming (super fast!)

Thanks for this as I forgot to mention they do offer Olarm but after reading reviews and seeing the pricing im not too keen on that.I did see the IP150 module for around R2k and that would suit my needs perfectly,but that can wait a couple months while I get used to the alarm system to see if I n I need any cellphone integration.

How does your automations.yaml file look? Also are you running the latest release of the script (from 2 days ago)?

I can see that my device can connect to mqtt server (misquito ), I installed it as a supervisor addon.

Edit: nvm got it working. I was big dumb dumb, forgot to add mqtt broker inside of HA

Glad to see you got it working.

Think I may need to update again to the latest version if there is another release out.

lawdy thats massive amounts of devices!

Really enjoying setting up my smart home so far.

Got my CBI switch connected to a tuya account. Will play around this weekend and see if I can get tuya local to work. I get a feeling that this can be slightly addictive and expensive hobby
