So found a new hobby last night, decided to automate things a little using LinuxMCE.

Looks like I may have my work cut out for me and it's going to be a costly project so would like to buy the right gear first time round. Currently looking at x10 devices to control lights, blinds TV's etc. Does anyone here have any experience with home automation?

X10 is a bit unstable with our electricity.

That sucks considering there aren't many options in SA, from what I've seen so far that is. Guess I can try sourcing Z-Wave from somewhere.

There are about four options..
I'll see if I still have information on them.

I have installed x10 at my house. So far(+6 months) no problems with it. I have a CM15Pro device that connects to the pc and powerline through a normal plug. With the CM15 you get software free for basic functions. I moved over to mControl and Homeseer for more advanced functions and also Media Centre integration. Also going to start using Z-wave very soon. There is a guy on bidorbuy that sells home automation equipment.
