Hi Guys.

Im a total noob when it comes to projectors and what to look for.. please help me.

So im looking to buy a Home Cinema Projector, i have an Entertainment area with bar and fireplace, and Im looking to use the one wall as a bigscreen to watch Mostly Sport and DSTV.
The use will be in the day - late evening. So it needs to be functional in a bright'ish environment. Also it doesnt need to be FULL HD nor 3D.
Like i said its for that braai time and watching the rugby or Cricket on DSTV.

The room is about 4m x 5.5m, distance to wall from where i would mount the projector is about 4m.
The projector will be mounted above those aliminium doors (i.e. an opening). The wall that i want to make the screen is about 5x3m and the screen can be about 3m x 1.8m is this sufficient??

So i've seen this projector and would like to know if it would be sufficient for my use.

Doesn't sound like a very decent projector, you looking at above 10k for a decent one that'll last you a good few years. The ones for four to five grand are mainly used for laptop presentations not as a daily or weekly TV setup.

ok so here is another one:

Frankly I wouldn't buy such a projector because it is not from a recognized brand AND you can't have it demoed in front of you. You will have to import it, and it would be a huge risk.

Its like the saying goes - bargains can be expensive. Spend R10k on a projector that you will be able to replace and swap out under warranty if you need to, rather than spend R6500 on a projector that might break one week later for which you have no warranty.

The Samsung projectors are very nice. My friend has one. Think it cost him like 15k - 20k but damn it is worth it. Looks amazing compared to my little LG LED. One day when I have a big enough place ill spend around 20k-30k on a projector setup .

Rather get a normal well branded TV than buy that cheap projector.

Thanks for the feedback guys... Someone i know has a LG one and native res is 800x600 he says its fine to watch sport.

Any comments Tremayne? What LG model do you have?

I can get an Acer X1383WH
WXGA 1280x 800 native
Native Aspect ratio of 4:3 ( i hear 16:9 is better, but how bad is 4:3?)
13000:1 Contrast Ratio
3100 Lumens
HDMI
2x Digital Zoom
Autokeystone Nvidia 3D
Spectraboost 31db
1 year warranty
remote etc...
R5,500

I have the LG Pb60g, it's extremely small but does exactly what I needed, it's also Led the only schlep is its 500 lumens. It's definitely only for light controlled environments but it is beautiful when I close the blinds.

So the Lg is priced at R5999.

But the Acer is R5,5k and 3000 Lumens and has the same WXGA 1280 x 800

The Acer has a native aspect ratio of 16:10 and not 4:3. It is the same as the LG.
The reason why the Acer is brighter is because it uses bulbs while the LG uses LEDs. The LG will theoretically last longer.

Things that can easily break in the Acer:
The colorwheel
The bulb

The main disadvantages of the LG projector is that the pixels are diamond shaped and the focus isn't 100% even everywhere.
The focus is mostly only noticed when you are really close to the screen.

Personally I would spend a little bit extra and get this one (LG-PA72G):

EDIT: The LED projectors are only good in dark rooms though

thanks for the Info LeonG.

The room wont be dark, its a Entertainment room with bar, and will open up to the patio outside with pool area.

Thus the curtains will be open most of the time to watch the rugby/cricket in daytime.

The replacement Bulbs are around R2000-R3000 for the acers, and what does a colourwheel cost?

If the room won't be dark, I would just get a 55 inch TV, not a projector.

i Have a 51 inch plasma in my TV room this would just be for sport in my entertainment room.

If the room is going to be light, I would not buy a projector. Just get another TV.

I doubt you're going to be able to see much with that much light coming in.
Maybe move the plasma to the entertainment area and install the projector in your tv room...or else just get a second tv.

Optoma DLP projector - they manufacture top quality products. For R10k-R15k you can get an excellent 3d full HD HOME THEATRE projector.

Does no one on this site have a mid to low range projector they are using to watch sport on???

I think that the consensus here is that it is not recommended to buy a low cost projector, especially if the lighting cannot be completely controlled.

I have used a low cost projector (borrowed from work) at home during the day, and it was garbage.

I hear you greg, think its just frustration that i cannot buy a expensive one now... Man. there goes my BBQ and the rugby game on a big screen.

I can control the light, there is curtains. Thing is once we have enough money after our renovations that we are completeing now, then we will make those windows so that they open onto a patio area, hence the curtain will go.
