Need to replace my old home desktop PC with something newer - around R6000. Only need the following:
- case+psu. Preferably something smaller than mid tower, but still need a bd-reader/dvd-writer and at least two harddrives to fit
- mb with integrated graphics
- cpu
- ram
- ssd of around 500gb (if not possible within budget, I'll just have to fit my existing hard drives)

PC mainly used for MS office aplications, web surfing, downloads, etc.

Any pointers appreciated, as I have been out of touch with latest tech/developments the last few years.

Waits for @Ponder to waste his time as he has all the time in the world to google parts and prices for daily requests. :crylaugh:
You should make a sticky bro.

Are you building this yourself?

On the SSD point, you could get a small SSD for the OS, and use existing hard drives for other storage.

If you want, go to carbonite forums and buy something that is pre-built.

On the CPU front you should opt for a Pentium G4560. It's dual core but dual threaded. Put the money saved on the Core i5 towards that Crucial SSD and 8gb DDR4 RAM ;)

That only saves ~R900.

You can add the SSD and another 4GB of RAM later but you can't add anything to make the CPU quad core later.

There's a R2000 price difference between the Core i5 and Pentium G.

Also if don't mind second hand you can get:

i5 6400
Gigabyte GA-B150M
16GB DDR4 2400MHz

for R3950

Just add the PSU and case and you then have about ~R1000 to use towards a SDD, so just add or save another R700 and get the 250GB Samsung 850 EVO.

Great. I didn't open the link. No HSF with the i5 though?

Thanks for the help. I'm considering the pentium G4560. According to the reviews it gives a lot for the price.

What is the story regarding 2x4 vs 1x8 gig ram? Will it make a difference in office/home PC. Also is 8 gig sufficient?

Just replace the 4GB I added with a single 8GB bringing the total up to R5763.

8GB is more than enough for office use.

Also is it really worth saving ~R800 now going for the Pentium you're going to be sad about in a year?

8 gig is more than sufficient.
2x4 means that it will run in dual channel mode which makes things better than a single 8gig stick.
