Hi. Is there somebody in pretoria that does home network installations?

I'll need runs to 5 different locations.

1 is 30 metres ( walking distance in the house) from my study
1 is 5 metres
2 are 10 metres
1 is about 20 metres

I had somebody in 2012 do 2 of these runs (the 5 and 30m) along with my DSTV and he made a stuff up of it. I had to get the DSTV redone but the 2 runs work so I never got them fixed but they need to be redone. My house has no place to get into the roof so the cables will probably need to be ran over the roof. There's a conduit for the 30m run already.

Any idea how much people charge to do this sort of stuff?

Can't someone get into the roof from the tiles? And running the cables over the roof won't look too lekker. Maybe a conduit running just under the ceiling skirting? Would look MUCH better and is easer.

Just my 2c.

Unfortunately it's not a tiled roof. The roof is quite high so you don't even see it.

Still... Half jobs... Eish
Consider the running them on the inside wall. If done properly it'll look fine

Yeah, but doesn't network cable hate being forced into tight bends?

Hi, are you willing to pay a cable company to install?
Yeah. That's the plan. I'm looking at doing it in the next half a year but that depends on how much it'll cost. If it's going to cost a fortune then I'd rather not do it.

The going rate is R550 per point, and a call out. Sometimes a 100-200 for trunking
R3k for you I guess
Ok. That's actually a good price. Do you do them or are you just saying what your experience is with how much they cost?

I use to do installations, but I dont have the time, so i make use of 3 options, depending the requirement.

1) proffesional cable company (that ive build a relationship with)
2) electrician friend, gave him the tools to crimp cables
3) have 2 teams of people that does telephone point installs, and use them over the weekends when they are not at work for cash in the hand.

Option one is the R550 per point guys

Option 3 would be your cheapest, the one guy is a draad trekker for like 15 years in goverment buildings in town, if you dont judge a book by its cover, then this guy would be the cheapest and quickest.

What's the quality of the work of the 3rd option like? Like I said in my first post, I've had bad experiences with people that think that they know what they're doing. But I suppose that he has so much experience though.

Could you possibly send me the details of the first option? Or are you not in Pretoria?
Isnt wireless an option?
Unfortunately not. I tried that a while ago but the places where I need connectivity are too far apart. But I suppose that one guy has a lot of experience and telephone cabling is pretty much the same as network cabling.

Well I had a similar situation, places are to far apart (house and flat), so I ended up just adding one cable between the furthest points, and connecting a wifi router to each point, so it's one network with one SSID, but two routers. As an option if you don't come right maybe.

Thread necro!

I'm looking for a home installation service in Jhb. I've seen a few websites, but figured I'd check in here before taking a chance with any of them.

I've actually got all the cabling, access points, other network hardware - I basically just need someone to pull the cables through the ceiling.

Any suggestions welcome.

Get an electrician to run the wiring for you, and terminate it yourself - assuming you are capable of terminating the ends yourself - its fairly easy, you just need a crimper and a punch tool. You could be lazy and just crimp both ends with an RJ45 instead of going to a jack plug one end.. I usually try to do things properly and run to a board/ patch panels.
I used to do it for a living though not so many moons ago.

Any electrician will have plenty of experience pulling wire, and running piping.
Make sure that they put it into conduit.

I've always been a bit scared about running network cables like electricity cables though: next to other mains power cables and with right bends (especially forcing against the wall with a corner). Haven't you had any issues doing that?
