Hi Guys,

I have been struggling with wireless at my place for the past 2 years.
The problem i have is that my ADSL is situated in my office outside of my House (Granny flat).
I need connectivity in the house and wireless just does not cut it, as these walls are incredibly thick and the signal is just to weak.

I have now decided that wired is definatly the way to go.
So.. does anyone know what it cost (roughly) to run 50m of cabling to the house.

If anyone knows someone who can do this or come quote me on doing this, it would be most appreciated.

Last time I bought a long length I paid R6 pm and R3 for the connector from Matrix. I'm sure you could do it yourself? Wait you are talking about putting in a network cable right? As in cat6e cable from office router to home switch? Or do you need telephone cables put in?

I could do it for you... but I'm in Joburg! :D

Seriously, you can do it yourself for a couple of Hundred bucks.

Easiest way would be to suspend the cable in the air between the buildings along a supporting wire (NOT a power cable!).
You will need to go to the hardware store and buy a masonry drill bit capable of going through two layers of brick.

Why don't you create a high speed wireless bridge between the two buildings and then install an AP inside the house?

I have my WIFI router in the ceiling and reception is 10x better, I have since done it for a few other people as well.
Resetting the router is just a bit of a pain.

I also need to put cable in between 2 building, I decided to just dig my own tranches and use pvc style pipes to put the cable in, before it goes into the ground. Will be neater and probably better off than a cable hanging in the air.

I agree, suspending a cable between the buildings is looking for trouble. The wireless route (Ubiquiti or Miro) would be better, but if you have to go with a cable make sure to put decent earthed lightning protectors on each side.

ground loops are bad news - only do this if you know what you are doing. Also keep in mind the lightning protectors reaction time vs distance. protectors take time to react, and in that time the surge is past the arrestor - placing the arrestor as far from your first switch will give the best chances of your IT kit surviving a strike ( putting the arrestor next to your switch will not help)

Cat6 armoured cable (stabilised plastics) with protected terminations

Did the same thing actually... was a pain, but its worked out well in the end.

Thanks for all the advise and feedback.
Now all i need is to find a place to buy the cable without breaking the bank.

Any ideas where the best place would be to get the shielded exterior cable?

Hey

Me and my neighbour had a 75m cable running from my house to his. We fastened it my cable ties and where it had to hang we used normal white PVC pipe. Had no issues for over 2 years. Normal cable goes for like R4 to R6 at most places and the connector is also around R5 a pop.

Have fun
