Home Schooling - discuss

I would hope that it is not just her alone. She can't do this without a husband. As the kids get older and older I will have to play a bigger role in their education even though the system is designed for a lot of self-teaching.

My wife and I both have University degrees, hers is fortunately in education (I married good). I have two under-graduate degrees and my masters.

My eldest son (just turned 10) is three years advanced beyond his maths level and has already finished a year of Latin. My daughter (8) is two years advanced in her maths level. They both read copiously and have excellent vocabulary. I credit a lot of that to my wife... but also to the curriculum.

See now here is a good example of home schooling working, but what do you do to get your kids to interact with others their age? Are they part of sports clubs etc.? Im all for teaching your kids to be bright but you have to have balance otherwise the wheels fall off at a later stage

edit: you are also right with the whole playing a bigger part in their education later in life, I found that my dad helped me a hell of lot more as I got older

Yes, they are home schooled. They have been and are involved in quite a few clubs. Chess club, Swimming, Monkeynastix, Computer Club, Typing class, etc.

I think their social development is just fine... but it is something I will continue to monitor.

Besides all that I try to spend as much time as possible with them cycling, camping, astronomy, hiking, role-playing (dungeons and dragons) and other hobbies.

They are fantasy and sci-fi nuts like me... Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. Books, movies, comic books, figurines, collectibles, etc. :)

Is your kids home school'd ?

I hope not. I would say yes, parents have a huge influance in their kids schooling and need to help where and when they can. But to deprive your kids of the outside world is wrong in a million ways. Period. They can have an IQ of 200 they will still not make it in the real world without social skills. That is a fact

How am I depriving them of the outside world? I would venture that my kids are outside more than the typical state-schooled kid.

Got that from your previous post just above this one. But that is not the case for the 90% of other people doing home schooling ;)

That's my point! Your wife is an educator and you are highly educated as well. This friend of mine has matric, her husband has matric and because everyone else is home schooling in their church they are doing the same.

I think he meant mingling with other cultures. Kids have to learn how to relate to other cultures and work with people of different cultures. At school some of the work and projects they do are done in teams and these are mixtures of different cultures, genders, beliefs etc

How often do your kids mix inter-culturally?

Private schools only for my kids ....... even if it kills me.

(even if I'm out the country by the time I have liteys)

We've sacrificed a lot to ensure private education for the kids. Keep debt to a minimum, ditch the maid and garden service, live responsibly and it is possible. Private schools have fee structures ranging from very affordable with discounts for families to very expensive...depends what suits your
pocket.

Son will do normal Primary school, from there he will be sent to Afrikaans Seuns hoër in PTA

Daughter same thing, Public primary school then Afrikaans Meisies in PTA for high school.

just my 2c ....... but I think sending kids to same sex only schools is just as bad as badly done home schooling.

Now there's another thing I have a problem with. A boys' or girls' only school.

Ja, I think Churches are to blame when they think that everyone can do home schooling. I have to agree with you there. Our church would probably have tried to talk that couple out of doing this. They are probably not qualified.

Besides the in-school projects on the Romans, Egyptians, Vikings, and all the other cultures, our kids know and are friends with people from a myriad walks of life... Black South African, Zambian, Zimbabwean, Indian, American, Asian, etc... including other religions as well. They are perfectly at home with diverse cultures and classes. They can go from helping and playing in the dust with the little kids at the orphanage to sitting and talking with adults at a meal table. I believe they have met people from more countries than most children. Besides that they have traveled a lot more as well.

Funny you should mention that. A colleague has a son at an all boy's school and the boys there are "girl mad" and socialise with girls from all girls's schools. Those girls are really scary. My kids are in a mixed school and are mostly nonchalant about the opposite sex and often irritated by them.

Another tangent...boarding schools...why would parents ship their kids off? I love having my kids around. Endless fun and entertainment.

I live somwhere in a radius of about 200k from Cape Town. Many of my collegues have sent their kids Jan van Riebeeck High School in Cape Town after they were in our own Primary School. There is actually quite a large contingent from our town at JvR High School. Our local high school is not as good compared to JvR. If you want the best education for your kids some sacrifices must be made. But I agree it is tough, very tough to send your children away.

Aye, I never once met a happy hostel dweller ...... just from my personal experiences, I will never send my kids to boarding school.

I loved being shipped off to school. Why? Lets just say sometimes the situation at home is less than idyllic.

The school was co-ed - not that it made a difference - all boys of that age are girl mad - it's called puberty. ;)

Correct bwana.

I know alot of friends who went to an All boys school aka technical school. I think in total from grade 8 - 12 they had a total of 4 girls in the school during that period. They all turned out pretty fine ;)

I just feel that Girls and Boys at Highschool are like little ripe apples who just want to be chowed. My kids will have to hold that back a bit :D

The reason I want this done is because I know what it was like in our school co-ed. and that was a sex fest tbh

I am going to home school our kids....doen quite a bit of reading up on it and weighed it out. Decided on home schooling. There are quite a lot of these institutions out there that have regular get togethers, sport, camps etc.

And I am lucky enough to earn while I home-school, because of having my own nursery school

I couldnt do that to my kids - having been a teacher briefly I realised I'm probably not a very good teacher. :)

I'm more than happy to leave teaching to the pro's and augment that learning experience wherever/whenever I can.

Good luck to you though. :)

Are you going to be able to spend enough time educating your kids while you're running the nursery school without neglecting the nursery school kids or your own? The home schooling should take up at least 6 hrs a day.
