I don't think it's a case of "what the ANC" wants; the curricula in use seem pretty decent to me.

Fortunately, I can afford to send my kids to a private school. There are good non-private schools, but it can be tricky tracking them down.

Cost-wise, for many families, it's cheaper to have both parents work and send kids to private school than it is to lose one salary and home-school.

Seconded. I went to boarding school, and while I enjoyed it, I would never send a child there. I feel I missed out so much with my family.
 
Personally I'd "home school" my kids from day 1 (yes, the day they're born) and spend a crap load of time with them before they actually start school.

I'd like to be able to lay a firm solid foundation for them, to get their young minds thinking for themselves. And I will then ask them if they would like to learn more at home or at a "big school"

Social interaction for kids is very important, I can just see how my two nieces are flourishing at school. My sister tells me they're growing up really fast and I'm missing it ....... but to the point, kids need the variety of opinions and different things they experience in social enviroment.

I won't even bother sending them to a private school for "better" education as those people are also prone (if not more so) to peer pressure and weird cults/drugs.

Teaching your kid well enough to think for themselves BEFORE they go to school is paramount. They'll ask the right questions, they'll learn more, they'll be more open to change.

What the OP said about the friend is kind of weird. You're going to get these kids who will get into fights in their ADULT life about Jesus and the "unpure" stuff other people do. All would then end up with an unplanned pregancy with some pastor's son....

seen it happen a million times...
 
I see a post on people who were home schooled. You take a look at the successful people that went to school, even if they were dropouts ?

There is something to be said about the 'Old Boy Network' - a lot of contacts are made as kids that can develop into valuable resources as you get older.
 
I fully agree with Bwana, going to school can help you keep meet some of the most valuable contacts you will ever have in your life. I have been told stories at my school of these events, even two men meeting out in the gym on a cruise ship in the carribean who did not know each other but instantly clicked because they went to the same school.

Home schooling education may be slightly better (even though I doubt it), but what you gain in knowledge is nothing in comparison to your loss in social development

I have been very fortunate to have always been with my kids. WHen oldest was baby, I was teacher in baby class. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to move unto another school, where she happened to fall in my class age group again. Then fell pregnant with youngest. Unfortunately, the school closed down (due to a forced move of premises...long story) and I had to find another job. And yet again I was lucky enough to have my kids with me.

Yes, they were exposed to other cultures etc... It was difficult for my oldest when I started my own school, as she missed her friends. But the advantage was that I got to spend a lot of one on one time with her.

She is now 4. She can write and recognise almost all the numbers from 1-10. She can write and recognise a lot of alphabet letters, and write her own name. And her english is almost as good as her afrikaans.

And I have to agree with you with the strange cults etc in private schools...

Not that we are fully private, but we are a decent school, yes you get your few weirdo's but cults? Lets hear it...

Afrikaans schools have this whole Afrikaans tradition to it. I want my kids to know who and what they are while they're under my roof. I think it's important. Was for me and I appreciate it, and hope they will too.

Affies is a rowwe afrikaans school :D But its a good school.
We have hosted guys from there during interschools, pretty decent guys
 
Well I am Homeschooled and i haven't been sorry for a moment, i believe i am getting a higher education than most, i don't have to learn for 6hours a day and write exams of 3 hours,

I Learn for 2 hours a day (if that much) on the work i have to do for each subject.
I write exams of maximum 2 and a Half ours, which i am busy with.

I study through BIDC which is a Cambridge University College in Johannesburg although i write at BIC in Pretoria.

So like i say don't deliver comment on homeschoolers unless you have seen(with your own eyes) that kids can't interact, i have got ALLOT of bad things to say from my church although most people i come across say i am much more mature than kids my age.
 
Fair enough, but you dont know what you are missing out on at school. The good stuff that is. And you will not have access to people who will help you out (be it in job interviews etc) not because they know you, but because they went to the same school as you.
 
Dude, you goto a well known school, and uhm this is the first time i ever hear people helping one another out just because they goto the same school, for me i couldn't care less about social life, i have MY own time which belongs to ME not to my teacher who needs to teach 39 other kids in my class.

Have you ever been to a Home Schooling place? I admit Homeschooling is not for everyone but i learn SOO much more at home than i would've at school...
