Home security - Camera's

http://www.zoneminder.com !!!

I have two zoneminder boxes running at home (on Ubuntu 8.10) and each box has two old tv-tuner cards installed. I've taken old webcams, and standard analogue bullet cams, and connected them directly to these four tuners, and thrown in a nice Axis 210 ip cam for good measure too.

Zoneminder seriously rocks, and is so easy to configure, and utilise.

Check it out!

ZoneMinder looks quite impressive. I see that have it bookmarked, but never tried it

Just tried to install it, but it is masked due to security vulnerabilities. I hope your boxes are firewalled!

Product description

The DCS-2121 is a versatile and unique surveillance solution for your small office or home. Unlike a standard webcam, the DCS-2121 is a complete system with a built-in CPU and web server that transmits high quality video images for security and surveillance. The DCS-2121 can be accessed remotely and controlled from any PC or notebook over the local network or through the Internet via a web browser. The simple installation and intuitive web based interface offer easy integration with your Ethernet/Fast Ethernet or 802.11g wireless network. The DCS-2121 also comes with remote monitoring and motion detection features for a complete and cost-effective home security solution.

Wireless G connectivity

The DCS-2121 offers both 802.11g wireless and Ethernet/Fast Ethernet connectivity, making the DCS-2121 easy to integrate into your existing network environment. The DCS-2121 works with a 10Mbps Ethernet based network or 100Mbps Fast Ethernet based network for traditional wired environments and works with 802.11g routers or access points for added flexibility. The Site Survey feature also allows you to view and connect to nearby wireless networks.

Snapshots, recording & storage

Using the Snapshot and recording features, you can save snapshots and record video and audio directly from the web browser to a local hard drive without installing any software, making it convenient to instantly capture any moment from a remote location. The DCS-2121 allows you to record directly to a local network area storage device without the use of a dedicated PC for storing recorded video.

Surveillance software

Included with DCS-2102/2121, D-ViewCam 2.0 IP camera surveillance software is a comprehensive surveillance system designed to centrally manage multiple IP cameras for home, Small Office and Home Office (SOHO), or Small and Medium Business (SMB) users. Supporting up to 32 IP cameras, D-ViewCam 2.0 is compatible with all current D-Link IP cameras, offering digital monitoring and recording capabilities of video, audio, and events for various security applications.

This software provides users with a wide array of features for added convenience, including video recording and playback, Video mode, Map mode, Wizard mode, Expert mode, Event Action, and more, offering users powerful surveillance software that’s easy to use.

Every(one else's) camera/system mentioned here, while they can get interesting, have one critical failing: you're stuck with the lens they give you. And, any time you come with one solution to a problem that has different ways of being solved, you end up doing a less than spectacular job when the answers are at the extremes.

To wit: a tele lens zoomed tight in on a target (say a gate) will do way better than any one of those devices, similarly a wide angle lens covering a swathe of garden/wall will do better too. Which is why I go with (what is to me) a real camera body onto which I can fit the right lens for the job.

And that's before the other stuff like native IP and the expansion possibilities (but the D-Link mentioned there looks nice, but it'd be a pain to get that into some kind of weatherproof box...!)

i set up a security system for a pharmacy this weekend, after playing around with ip cameras for about a year at work for various projects

2 x vivotek ip pz6122 cameras, circa £500each. these things are not cheap, but they were absolutely amazing in operation. 10x optical and 10x digital zoom, motion speed adjustable.

anyway, i have nothing to add, except that ip cameras arent cheap compared to traditional cctv stuff, but man they are cool.

What about CCTV?
You mean what I've been trying to say all along...?

Oooo, pretty! Thanks for the link, they have IP cameras about which I wish to know more...

A 4 channel capture card (with software - motion detection, hot spots + recording to HDD) + 4 IR cameras (10meter to 50meter range) will do it.
Indeed it will, but that's a non-trivial wiring/setup exercise!

Y-Cam?

Hi Krudonix,

Have you had a look at the Y-Cam cameras?

They are known to be very good IP cameras at inexpensive prices.

You can check out their local office at http://ycamafrica.com/home.html and check out the video.

The Y-Cam day camera is R1700 and the Y-Cam infrared one is R2000. There is also an outdoor housing available for about R750.

You can view the image through your web browser AND through your cellphone as well which is very cool and works well.

For recording and storage of images, you can use the RedZebra Security system which can receive images from the Y-Cam and allow you to quickly and easily manage and monitor your images from your different cameras. Each camera in stored in its own gallery in RedZebra.

It also works via a web browser and mobile phone and can also send out SMS alerts with link to camera image. The price is R49 per camera.

So as you can see, you can get a fully working system up and running at well below your budget.

We have one in the office and works well with the IR at night and the wireless is a great help. Setup and management is really great as well.

You can contact their SA office if you want to know more: [email protected] or 011 795 1368

Hope that helps
