Hi all,

For some reason, I'm having an issue and I don't know why it's not working.

Scenario:

PC 1 is connecting via Neotel device to the internet.
PC 1 has a wireless network card which connects to a Mega 105WR router (using it as a wireless hub for the flat)

PC 2 (Laptop) has a wireless connection which connects to the Mega 105WR router to access PC 1's Neotel connection.

DHCP on the router is disabled and PC 1 & PC 2 have IP address range 192.168.0.x as their IP's with the router still using 10.0.0.2 (but PC 1 can connect to it)

Any idea why on PC 2, I can ping 196.25.1.1 and get replies but can't view any web sites?

Thanks!

EDIT:

Okay, it can ping 196.25.1.1 and get replies but any other address I try ping does not work.

Ok, problem fixed.

But I have no idea why it's working because...

On PC 2 I gave it the settings, didn't want to work.

Then I was told to make it "obtain automatically" and it worked.

The IP address it got was ".148" instead of ".2" which I gave it.

Can someone maybe explain it to me?

I'm not too sure, but it sounds like something to do with Internet Connection Sharing if I'm not mistaken. I think you have the Neotel phone if I'm not mistaken, so in order to share that with another pc you would need a proxy on PC1 or ICS.

Hmmm, it is quite interesting

Well, no proxy setup or ever setup.

The problem happened again, I basically redid everything again and it worked.

I think maybe... just maybe my router is on its way out (or at least, the wireless part)

Well. It can be a number of things. Reading your post, the first thing that comes to mind is DNS. If I understand you correctly your PC1 Neotel have been shared with Internet Connection Sharing. Once this is done your windows XP Pro SP2 automatically created a very basic DNS and DHCP server. Which is why after selecting DHCP it should automatically give it the correct DNS and DHCP settings.

When you say it happened again, what do you mean. Did you assign it another static IP or does it just disconnect somehow?

The fastest way to check what the DNS IP is is by typing the command ipconfig /all in the command prompt. On PC2 it should show the IP of PC1(presuming ICS is set up on PC1). You can allways have a look at the DNS server IP on the internet that you receive from PC1's internet connection. If you want to manually add an IP on the 2nd PC. See what IP's you get when you used DHCP and put them in the DNS and default gateway. You can maby add the internet DNS to the alternate DNS.

This way when you browse it should resolve a name. Another way to test DNS is to ping an internet IP address like 209.85.227.147. If it replies you know that you are defenately connected to the internet. Now Ping this IP again but add a -a between ping and the IP. Eg. ping -a 209.85.227.147 This should now show Pinging www.l.google.com [209.85.227.147] with 32 bytes of data:
If it does not you know there is a problem with DNS. Just a couple of things you can test.

The other thing that I do not understand is, why would you want to use a telkom router as a hub if you allready have a wireless NIC in both PC's. To be hones if you just use those 2 PC's on the network it would be easyer to use an Ad Hoc setup to directly connect the NIC's. This will also cut out some complications as a routers pupouse is to connect different network subnets. This means that some routing is normally done on the router. So it could be a configuration problem on the router as well.

Hope I was able to assist. Sorry if I understood the way your network interconnects incorectly.

Anyways. Let me know if you manage to fix something.

Since the major redo of everything a few days ago, this problem has not happened again.

My GF was actually too scared to restart her laptop but I did for her last night and it didn't happen again.

@emptyshadow: I use the Telkom Router (Wireless part) for the flat, I have neighbours upstairs that connect to my PC via that to get access to my TV series that I have shared.

So ultimately, it basically servers as a hub/switch for myself.
I could go the cable route but I'm trying to cut down on cables in my room and flat.
