Learned folk of MyBB,

I need you advise regarding a home surveillance system. We will be hiring a nanny to take care of the kid soon, and with some of the horror stories of nannies abusing kids, we would like to have something to keep track of whats going on at home. Bonus is that we can also use this for general surveillance.

Can you suggest what i should be looking at, costs involved etc. I would like the setup to be neat i.e. minimal wires so thing should ideally run in the ceiling. i should be able to log into this system remotely, the system should be looping recordings too. Not sure what other requirements i have, as this is quite new to me

Hikvision IP dvr, the cloud interface that Hikvsion does its awesome and idiot proof, the IP camera's are fantastic , but the kit is pricey , 4 ip camera's + dvr and hdd, you looking at around 7 to 10 k, but worth it

I am quite sure you can pick up the same items as per the Takealot basket for cheaper if you shop around.

Try PcLink Computers as they also stock the individual items including the HIKVision DVR's and Cameras.

How are the cameras powered if there are no wires?

IP Cameras work off wifi or lan, so for the wifi ones you basically need power only, pretty easy as you already have power everywhere in the house.

Non ip cameras need COAX cables from the DVR to the camera for every camera.

If you can hide the cables easily just go for the older types, also much cheaper to replace a broken camera that way...

I have a HIKVision system at home which at the moment includes four IP cameras and NVR viewable on three iPhones, two iPads and an old TV in out garage. It was highly recommended not to go for WiFi cameras for use outdoors as they give endless hassles with WiFi signal strength so all my camera's are connected to the NVR via UV coated, shielded CAT5E solid copper cable and powered by PoE. I went for a 16 channel NVR and the four camera's I have at the moment are rated at 5MP, with two having 4mm focal length covering two entrances on to our property and two have a 2.8mm focal length to get a wider coverage of the street outside our house. The setup wasn't cheap at all and I am not done but the performance has been exceptional.

Yea cost is the other thing, I have 9x "hd" cameras on my dvr and bet my entire setup cost about the same as 2 of your cameras at most.

Okay so from what i am reading the takealot setup is not too bad - wired has advantages. I guess i could shop around to get a better price on it.

So now apart from buying the parts, the installation - i am not the most handy around the house - thoughts on getting this installed? Maybe there a recommendations for re-sellers who also do installation - and the combo price might be better then buying the hardware separate and getting a separate installer?

I would prefer a system where the camera's run on CAT5 cable

Hikvision IP camera's are the stuff, powered over PoE and you dont have to use their NVR. I have mine setup with Blue iris running on my home automation server. Even better is they support RTSP so they integrate directly into that home automation.

exactly what I want to do. Already have POE for AP's.

What system do you recommend? link if possible :)

I went for a HIKVision system, so can only recommend it, I have the following at the moment:

1 x HIKVision DS-7616NI-K2/16P NVR
2 x HIKVision SE-DS-2CD2055FWD-I Cameras (4mm fixed length)
2 x HIKVision SE-DS-2CD2055FWD-I Cameras (2.8mm fixed length)
1 x WD 4TB 3.5" SATA3 6.0Gbps Surveillance HDD - Purple
Linkbasic Shielded UV Protected Cat5e Cable

We view the system on our iPhones or iPads and an old TV mounted in the garage.
