Home theater advice

this sounds like a very promising sound system. I dont know much about theatre systems but am in the market for one up to a max value of around 6k. Was previously looking at the Yamaha RX-365 (i think it was) with speakers/woofer for 6k.

As I have a largely Sony setup it would be good to keep the sound inline :P

I have a PS3 which i use for most of my media (streaming music, movies, playing Blu-rays and games etc.). and a Sony EX4 LCD TV. Questions:

With this setup and in using an optical connection between the PS3 and the TV, I take it I get a true surround sound/5.1 experience for anything that I put through the PS3?

What if I actually wanted to use the Blu-Ray player? How does that change the sound setup and/or do i need a seperate connection?

LCD or plasma - depends if the TV's going to be used as a PC screen. Or if the room is bright. Only factors that would sway me to get LCD

Canon or Nikon - Nikon. Feels better in my hands

Audi or BMW - Audi

PC or Mac - PC. Price: performance way better

Xbox or PS3 - PS3. More powerful

Blackberry or iPhone - iPhone. More powerful

Cats or dogs - dogs. More useful.

The Sony amp will give you Bravia sync which syncs all your Sony goodies nicely.

It also looks the business. I can't believe how awful the older Sony 6.2 system looked. They should be shot for having the speakers exposed with no black covers.

Yes you will get 5.1 over optical for anything that is 5.1 enabled. Music is 2 channel, so you would get 2.1 in that case.

Don't think the Blu-ray player will change much. You will be limited to optical which is 5.1 but not HD.

All I can say is that I am thrilled with the Sony STR500, even if it doesn't have HD audio/audio over HDMI.
 
Nah ... I don't want to fight ;) Its festive season and that was a little harmless fun!

Though - I do notice a trend with supporting the underdog ;)

If you're feeling festive then just put it down to different strokes. No need to continue stirring the pot after claiming you want to be nice. :whistle: :D

thanks for your insights. Seriously considering buying one of these now.

If i wanted to, could i get music out of the entire sound sytem? A big part of the drive in getting surround sound is for music as well, and not just the movies? excuse me if this is an obvious question. still getting my head around this stuff!
 
My friend has a Samsung surround sound and there's a certain preset to get full surround off 2 channels media.
