Home theater system for TV with input only

Hi Guys

I am looking for a Home theater system that I can use with my TV, in order to get the sound to play through the home theater system instead of the TV.

The issue that I am facing is that my TV only has inputs, and no outputs that I can use to output the sound. My setup is the following:

TV
Mygica enjoy TV box(used as a STB for streaming TV)
Xbox 360

I use both devices by plugging them into the HDMI inputs on the TV, but my current HTS does not support HDMI input and output so I can send it back to the screen.

Does anyone know of a HTS that I would be able to achieve this with, that is not one of the extremely pricey AV receivers? I am looking for a fairly priced option.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just bypass the TV sound altogether. If you get a decent home theatre system they normally have several inputs. You can then play all the sound through the home theatre directly from the STB or the Xbox360.

I do it this way at home as I find that sound coming from both TV and surround sound sounds rubbish. It sounds way better just through the home theatre.

THanks for the suggestion.

This is what I am trying to do, but the issue is that they both connect with HDMI. If I put the HDMI cable into the home theatre, I need another output HDMI from the Home theater to get the image on the TV with input, and as the TV has no output that I can relay to the Home theater, I don't know how to do it.

I have not seen any Home theater that Has both HDMI input and HDMI output that does not cost R6 000 +, and I am looking to find a cheaper solution.
 
The Xbox has an optical output as well which can be used, but that doesnt help with the STB though. Have you tried a HDMI splitter?
 
I suppose I could sort something out for the Xbox yes, but the stb will be an issue. I have not tried a splitter, as my current Home theatre system is outdated, it only uses component cables and does not have HDMI, so I want to buy a new one, but I want to make sure I buy one that will work with the least effort, seeing as I need to buy a new one anyway.
 
You're looking for an amplifier - or receiver - that can do HDMI switching, not merely passthrough.
 
Does your TV have a headphone output that you could line into your current amp?

I am looking for an AV receiver yes, but they are so expensive, it is not worth the cost to me as I do not use it enough to justify paying 6k plus for a system. aren't there cheaper solutions for an AV receiver? I reckon I could get the receiver only, as I can still use the current speakers, and some others I have stored.

The TV does have headphone output, and I have a 3.5mm to coaxial cable, but does that not output as 2.1 only?

Using the TV output will result in 2.1. This is not ideal, but by taking away the immediate problem it could give you breathing room to wait for something to come up on the specials or to look around second-hand.

using the 2.1 out sounds about the same as the TV speaker, but perhaps it is better to just endure it until I find something decent at a reasonable price.

This seems more reasonable. Not sure about the brand though, I will check it out, thanks.
 
You can get away for less than R6k, even new. With a bit of digging you'd likely find better deals still. Depending on your priorities you could also start with a lower-mid-range receiver and 2 speakers, and expand the system as your budget allows.
 
Thank you all. I think I will look around for a receiver only. I have some extra speakers and a subwoofer to connect to it.

That thing can do it all, not sure what else you can possibly need ;) . It will even turn your tv into a "smart tv" . The blueray drive becomes the "control panel" for your tv in other words.
