Home Theater vs Cinema

Sorry for derailing your thread alkit, maybe keeping the home cinema may not be such a bad thing after all :D

Question is - is it worth the price difference over the 51 inch. And even bigger question - at those prices, it's almost hitting what I paid for my projector+screen (both imported - projector R15000, screen R6000)...

Also let me add in that when I decide to watch a movie, have to spend 10 mins moving couches around in the lounge to set it up in 'cinema' mode. And 10 mins moving the couches back. With a TV, I'd just lie across the couch.

For price/size/picture quality, it can't be beat.
 
As far as I'm concerned it's pretty hard for the cinema to beat watching at home. They may spend a fortune on sound equipment for example, but that's because they're trying to create good sound in a huge room. Better can be achieved at home for much less. That's before we even get to problems like them having the volume so high it's distorting. Then on the visual side on occasion I've had to get up repeatedly to ask them to please get the damn picture in focus. These problems, along with twits who use their phones, don't stop talking or bring their children then let them run around, don't happen all the time, but they do happen.

And why wouldn't I want a large picture and pumping sound when watching a TV series? Any modern series is likely to have a superb audio mix well worth pumping through a decent system. If I am going to watch a TV series or a movie I want decent quality picture and sound, so that pretty much puts broadcast TV out of the running.

I don't really understand moving the furniture around. I keep everything in the same place.

I don't know what the Vitality price for movie tickets is these days, but I can rent a movie for R16. To go to the cinema I have to drive further, pay for parking, then for two tickets. I've always taken my own snacks into the cinema, so their prices there have not been issue. But that said, I didn't buy my stuff to do away with going to the cinema because I still went for a long time. It was so I could have a good experience whenever I watched anything at home. Over time though ticket prices became ridiculous and I eventually no longer bothered to go.

Your home theatre is your baby. How you first get the components and use it for few weeks and find something that you didn't know about it to tweak the sound and its much better. Other people (oaks) might not appreciate it as much as you do, but if you think of it,
Everything in life has some disappointments. You buy a new car and you on a bit of a high, after a few weeks/months, that high becomes just a normal drive in a car, so you look for something better. After you get that, the high falls away. We human, never satisfied with what we have.
 
Dislike going to the cimena's here in East London.

People on cell phones
Noisy kids
People clapping whenever there is an action scene.
People shouting out at the screen - there is a TV advert doing the rounds with the 2 big ladies watching PVR :)
 
Can't stand cinema's - especially in South Africa... there's always something annoying, blown speaker, noisy people, dirty, expensive, etc....

Much prefer my home setup... and the sound is better... just need to get the one window bricked up to sound proof the place a bit more.

Or double plane the glass so insulates while letting sun in.
 
Cannot eat what you want in, in theater.
Cannot sit/lie comfortably, in theater.
Cannot disconnect broken/vibrating/popped speaker, in theater.
Cannot pause when you need to take a leak/call, in theater.
Cannot rewind/replay if you wanna see something again, in theater.
Cannot talk to family, in theater.
Cannot avoid other people talking, in theater.
Cannot turn down volume, in theater.
Cannot avoid sticky seats, in theater.

At home, you can lie down, eat spaghetti, while pausing the movie or lowering the volume, to talk to your wife and the pizza guy on the phone, because you saved R300 by paying R22 for a movie.
(although that might cause you to have sticky seats too)

But seriously, I say keep the system, it has it good points.
Even if you need to move a couch or something, it beats getting into the car, driving to the mall, looking for parking, and paying a fortune for tickets and re-used popcorn.
 
I have a pretty decent setup at home with amplifier, 5.1 sound, 42" plasma and htpc. one of the first things i did was take awhile and look at where placement of screen, speakers and couches would work best.

if you have spent so much money on a projector, screen and then only realised that you hardly use it, then i suggest you take your time and look at your room. if you have to move your couches to watch from your projector you should consider a motorised screen from the ceiling.this way you watch from the lcd tv all your tv shows and when you want to watch from your projector the screen comes down directly in front of your tv.

heres a question; if your move your couches to watch from the projector then what about your speakers? do you move them too? if not, then you probably lose out on sound as well.

i have already realised that for myself, the blu-ray rips on my pc; while amazing to watch; are seriously lacking on the screen size. i intend to take quite a bit of time and money to get myself a projector and screen cos i would so rather do that than ever go to the cinema.

my friend has the setup i described and its amazingly versatile in that you can enjoy tv and projector from the same spot.

just a few thoughts. hope they are useful.
 
Nothing beats watching series/movies on my Home Theater setup. SterKinekor/NuMetro....pfft!

I've never really understood the clapping, booing, shouting. Some of the cinemas I've been to the guys whistle when an attractive woman appears. All very reminiscent of the general stupidity you get from a live studio audience. Maybe some people don't realise there aren't actually people behind the screen.

Back when I rented there, because I lived nearby, the discs always looked like someone had used them to test sandpaper. But now it would cost me over R20 just to drive there, so they'd have to pay me to make it worthwhile.
