So i just got my new projector and hd pvr installed and i'm now looking for a decent home theatre package to complement my setup. I have a budget of around 10k for and amp and speakers. I'm looking at the following setup:

Sony STR DH800 7.1 channel Amp
Sony SAW3000 Sub
Sony SSFCR6500 Speaker package

All this for just under 10k...

Is it worth it or are there any other recommendations?
 
I think the DH800 has been discontinued. Maybe try the STR-DN1010? Its brand new so may not be in all shops yet.
 
but to give you a proper answer after checking the listed components, I think you make a good decision based on the available capital. Sony is a very good brand and assuming you don't have audiophile expectations you will be happy with this system.
 
Do you have bluray? As sony has some quite good bluray home theatre systems as well.
 
I manged to get a quotation on 2 other systems:

Option 1:
Onkyo TX SR308 Amp
Jamo S426HSC Speaker package
Jamo SUB200

For R10950

Option 2:
Onkyo TX SR508 Amp
Jamo S506HCS3 Speaker Package
Jamo SUB250

For R14670

I'm thinking use the Amp from option 2 with speakers from option 1. Or get option 2 without the Sub and get it at a later stage, not sure how much the sub alone goes for.

What do you guys think of these compared to the Sony? I'm no home theater enthusiast, so if it sounds good to me, i'm happy...
 
I want a component system, not everything in one. I'm gonna get a PS3 for blu ray
 
Option 2 - Jamo SUB250 + Polk Audio PSW10 Subwoofer. That should bring the price down to +/-R12k.
 
What about Option2 with the SUB200 instead of the SUB250? Should bring the price down to about the same. Anyone tried any of these components or can recommend it?
 
Depending what you want also look at Sony DDW5500 6.2 channels or ddw7500 7.2 channels http://www.sony.co.za/product/ht-ddw7500 system. If your are looking for exceptional music quality your budget is to light and may afford only a decent amp. Let alone decent speakers will cost you the same budget each. For me the system is OK!

The all round performance is acceptable for the price and recently the DDW5500 at Makro was R5999.00 for the latest version (The one on offer at game for the same price is the older system). For the 7500 speak to Sound great or Cats to get a decent price.

As far as I know those Sony packages from Game, Makro etc. are only good for making noise... And they look very plasticky.... Initially i was considering one of those systems, but quickly reconsidered... However the seperate component systems seem pretty decent with wood finishes...
 
If you can afford a seperate component system, then it will easily be better than ANY of those packaged things that Game/Makro et all will sell.

I dont think there's much of a price difference between the Sony packaged deals and the Sony component systems which in my opinion are superior to the packaged systems. I think the Sony system quoted above is a mid to high level system in terms of the Sony offerings.

So the price for option 2 has dropped to R13570 with the SUB200. I'm waiting for the dude to quote me on alternative speaker packages and I'll choose from there... But I'm pretty keen on the Onkyo amp...
 
Option 2 - the Onkyo and Jamo speaker package is the best. Price isn't bad either. I have a Yamaha av-receiver and Jamo speakers. http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showfull.php?photo=16730

Beware of swopping out the speakers with a different amp, or the other way around, as you will find yourself with impedance issues which will damage your amp and/or speakers. Make sure that the impedance rating of the av-receiver matches that of the speakers, or that the speakers are at least within the range of the impedance rating of the amp. Many amps have switchover impedance ratings though - speak to your salesman about it...

95% of the component amps will work with 95% of the speakers out there

I'm not all that clued up with the technicalities surrounding AV equipment, however I assume that if the salesman advised the above package, the speakers and amp should be compatible. Basically when i requested a quote, I told him "this is my budget, what can you offer me?". And the Onkyo/Jamo package is what he offered, but he said he'd get back to me on some alternative speaker packages with that amp.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as i understand, by running a speaker with a lower impedance than the amp may result in damage to the amp and/or speakers. And speakers with a higher impedance combined with a lower impedance amp results in you not utilizing the setup to its full potential...
 
Ok so now my list of choices just got interesting. Keeping with the Onkyo amp which goes for R5840 I got quoted on 2 additional speaker packages to add to that:

Mission M33i tower power : R5990
Cambridge Audio Sirocco Speaker System: R6990

Both packages include Woofers.

Asthetically speaking i still prefer the Jamo package, however I haven't studied the above 2 technical specs yet...
