After being inspired by fellow formites who took the plunge with VOIP. Especially the formite (can't remember the name) who did the VOIP on LTE thread.

I have decided that I will partake on a similar adventure using 3G (while at work) and ADSL (while at home)

I'll be using SwitchTell, will send in the paperwork tomorrow and take it from there. Currently my cellphone bill is comes to R1200 for the wife and myself. We don't make use of our homes telephone line for calls.
 
I'm interested in this as well.

I have a Billion VoIP router at home but the #$(*% thing's wifi doesn't want to work. so it defeats the purpose for me personally as I want have the wife and I be able to make and receive calls via our cellphones over wifi.

The guys at Switch know what they're doing, so I don't think you'll find any issues there. VoIP works great over LTE in 9 out of 10 times, even with little signal. Latency is a lot better than on 3G and bandwidth is often far better than one would get on a 10Meg ADSL line, especially with regards to the upload speed.

We have quite a few clients on 3G also, but it's a bit more challenging to get it right and make sure it consistantly performs so that call quality doesn't suffer. Same goes for ADSL really.

I'm interested. Will you be using separate connections for VoIP and data or will you be sharing the connection with other devices? Also, what real speeds (http://www.speedtest.net) are you getting on both connections, especially during peek hours.

Let us know how things go and if you're experiencing difficulties. I'm sure the fellow formites will be able to offer advise and make sure you get it working properly. The technology (and knowledge) has come a long way in SA since early VoIP pioneering days, so there's no reason why you shouldn't get it working properly at both locations.
 
Hi guys,

Thank you all for the positive response so far.

Today: I signed up this morning with SwitchTel and organised two extensions. One for daily use and the other is for my wife/experiment with.

Currently at work and registered one line on my Note 3 with the Bria App. Made two calls on 3G/HSDPA using 711a audio codec

1st call to a cellphone worked perfectly no issues at all.
2nd call to a land-line person couldn't hear me.

More feedback to follow
 
Have you worked out your bandwidth usage yet? You should get better compression with G729 (I see it's a IAP for Bria). GSM will also give you better compression, but the quality won't be as good.

I haven't worked it out yet. I am planning to buy the G729 codec as I see it is extra. Are there any other applications you recommend that I can use?
 
Bria is probably one of the better provider agnostic clients. You can also give 3CX and Zoiper a go. I'd do some calcs and tests with the bundled codecs first before dropping money on G729. May also be worth getting a list of supported codecs from switchtel, I can't see it explicitly listed on their site. ilibc is worth testing if they support it.

We've had customers ask to use softphones clients on their mobile devices for work, but we've always been weary of it. I think it's great for home use or people who have a better appreciation for the technology. Supporting different clients across an array of different mobile phones with different firmware versions coupled with the sometimes unpredictability of office wifi is a daunting support task. So standardized DECT is what we go with in that situation.
 
Yesterday afternoon once I got home I decided to make a few more calls.

ADSL 10mb
WIFI to my Note 3

Didn't have any issues at all, except people on the other end are complaining of a beep the whole time. Not sure if it's Switch Tel or Bria.

When I get home today will test and find out.
