Home Web Server Advice

Big issue, I just realized fedora needs to be reinstalled every 6 - 8 months due to new releases this sucks epicly.

So this means I'll need to move over to debian or ubuntu.

Can someone please give me a short pro's and cons?

(I hate the look and feel of unity, but for future career skills, I can't allow that to be an influence.)

No need to reinstall. Updating from one Fedora release to the next is done without any issues. I have gone up from F18 to F20 in one night without any issues.

Why do you pop in here after I uninstall it?

Dammit. I'll reinstall again quickly.

(I had 21 and needed to up to 22 and read that updating isnt straight forward)

Switching to Ubuntu again, ( better documentation, and a noob like my need all the guidance I can get)

Okay I will build another one of them virtual boxes and document it step by step

What exactly does your VM enable you to do?

Just want to make sure we are on the same page?

A VM is a virtual Machine, it is an OS within an OS. Basically it's a Sandbox you can mess up in or do mission critical things with less consequences. In the case of Servers it also allows you to host more environments at a lower cost.

No no no I know what it is, I meant what does his set-up do?

Like what is he trying to do with the set up in the vm

Well, I think? Currently if I type in mydomain.co.za I get the this page:

"Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page"

-------------------------------------------

So now If I configure virtual hosts etc it should work right ?

Trying to ssh into the Ubuntu box.

From Windows I open up putty.

I type in [email protected] port 22 ( I'll change that when I can get it to work )

I then get in, and then in putty it prompts me for a password I then enter the password and then I get access denied.

I get this with root, thor, gandalf etc

I created the 2 others users as I don't want to use root.

I added them via sudo adduser thor

And then adduser thor sudo

Go to putty use that username, gets access denied.

I have openssh on Ubuntu desktop

I also added password authentication yes

Still doesn't worn

I would much prefer to install CentOS server like my VPSs is but I don't know how to configure static IP addresses like the desktop Ubuntu version allowed me to do
