Have a look at any decent installation or lab that uses proper trunking.

Power AND UTP running in the same metal trunking -- Power connected to a high end UPS -- sockets for ETH as well as power ( red plug ) facing external in trunking ( unless they changed the rules since I last looked )

OP can install fibre if it is just a short run and worried about the "sparklies" ( fibre to UTP converter box )

"Neat" is ALWAYS better.

I know you get dual trunking (cable skirting) that has a barrier between the AC and data channels. I know that SANS 10142 requires all conductors in a conduit to have a minimum insulation rating of the highest voltage in that conduit. But, I can't specifically find anything preventing a properly insulated data cable from being run in the same conduit as the AC. I'm sure it's there though.

Which UTP/STP does not have as far as I'm aware.

If it plays fine on 100mb wired but not n wifi then something is definitely wrong with the wifi link. How fast can you transfer files over the wifi link?

I've also got the same issue on my Wifi-N equipment..

it works perfectly, but when streaming HD content, it'll play fine for a bit then stutter...... even when the WIFI-AP and the HTPC are pretty much next to each other with full signal strength

You won't see any noticeable performance degradation when running CAT5e/CAT6 (UTP) in the electrical trunks (in your house).
Only where serious electrical interference (transformers/inverters) is involved AND long cable runs (60meter+) does it come into effect.
Then go for STP.

The question remains, "If you can find UTP/STP rated to 230V, is it legal to run it in the same conduit?"

I'm not sure.
I guess as long as your house doesn't burn down (and the cat dies in the process = SPCA on your case) it won't be an issue.
