Honeymoon holiday suggestions

Hey guys,

so following this thread i have tossed mozambique out of the question and will rather spend my money else where.

fire away with options, requirements are that it musn't be too far(not keen to fly like 8 hours etc), must be coastal, been to Mauritius so not really first choice (not that i didnt enjoy it)

current considerations from suggestions:

Madagascar
ReUnion

Please if you can suggest places to stay (even if just area) and awesome things to do / see.
 
You should consider Zanzibar as well. There are a lot of options around here, but I would recommend Nungwi or Paje. If you take a week you could spend three nights at both. I also think it would be cheaper than Madagascar/ReUnion if that is a consideration.

Check the fastjet website. Last time I checked you could get return flights JHB to Dar for less than R3000. From dar to zanzibar a return flight should be between 1 and 2k.

Cops here are corrupt but if you do transfers/make use of taxis it is not a problem. And bribes of R30 are suffcient to get out of almost any situation.

I spend a lot of time up here so feel free to ask questions if you have any.
 
hmm have had friends that had really bad experiences tehre with regards flights and getting stuck there and what not.

I can't really comment on that. I am sure it does happen, but I have travelled here 7 times in the last year or so. I always fly Mango (company pays) for about R7000 return from jhb direct to znz. Apart from myself there is a team of about 5 other people travelling regularly from SA. No one has been stuck yet.

Something that is quite off-putting about Zanzibar for a lot of people is the fact that everyone is muslim. This creates some friction between the tourists and locals in town, but generally the people are friendly. The muslim moral/cultural influence almost completely disappears if you are booked into a resort (which I assume you will). In town women are often stared at/made to feel uncomfortable if not modestly dressed.

Zanzibar....aka Diepsloot by the Sea

I hate the place. It is dirty, the food in the so called 5 star hotels SUCK, you cannot set foot on the beach without being accosted by aggressive locals that want to sell you tours and charters and various crap.

The beaches suck in general anyway. STAY AWAY.

Your issues with travelling far will be a problem for you though.
 
Rodriguez or Reunion.

Reunion is expensive but has a active volcanoe, its a french nation so all money done in EU.

Rodriguez, much cheaper beautiful etc etc. Haven't been to either but the Mauritians here love to go to both for their honeymoons.
 
Madagascar

I went there in 2011. Best holiday ever!

Think we spent R15k each for flights and accommodation for 10nights in absolute luxury. Most amazing food, rum, snorkeling and friendly people. I would suggest staying in and around NoseyBe.

Well Nosy Be is the main "touristy" island, you can fly there directly from JHB. Roughly a 300 square Km Island, and then a bunch of smaller islands around it.
There are extinct volcanoes to visit, amazing snorkeling in warm water - swam with turtles and huge schools of parrot fish. In certain months you can swim with the whale sharks. We hired scooters and traveled around the island, hardly any cars so it is very safe. The people are very friendly, do not beg, and I never once felt threatened. The wildlife is amazing, even a gecko or chameleon looks like it has come from the dinosaur times, huge! Then there are the Lemurs to see! Plenty of rum to drink, good local beer, crab,prawns,crayfish to eat as well as Zebu which is their local ox. There are also spice markets, vanilla beans, coffee merchants etc.

Other than that, just relax, swim, drink :)
 
Can recommended zanzibar as well. Had an awesome stay there two years ago.

Booked via AfricaStay. They also arranged a free upgrade for us for a unit with a sea view. We stayed at Diamond Dreams...awesome place and food was really good. Some nights they had a buffet set on the beach. The spa was excellent, but a bit pricey.

There wasn't free wifi back then, but we never bothered with it. Not sure if that's change now.

Also lots of sightseeing to do which AfricaStay recommended.
