Mark Zinde granted R10 000 bail

Brits - Mark Warona Zinde accused of killing his television personality mother, Hope Zinde, was granted R10 000 bail at the Brits Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

“There is no evidence that the applicant will endanger the safety of the public or any other person if granted bail... bail is fixed at an amount of R10 000,” Magistrate Moses Moswanganyi said.

He ordered Zinde to report to the De Deur Police station every day and to hand over his passport to Warrant Officer Audrey Motsepe who is investigating the case.

How Hope Zinde died

Investigating officer, Warrant Officer A Motsepe, said he had no reason to believe that Mark would be a flight risk despite having travel documents.

The investigating officer with 14 years’ experience, told the court of the bloody scene that greeted him at Mark’s home on the day his mother’s body was discovered.

“When I arrived at the estate, Mark was already in the back of a police van. Three officers who called me to the scene led me into the house,” Motsepe said.

“When I entered through the front door, there was dry blood in the passage. There were towels and a bucket filled with clean water. I was led to the garage where two vehicles, a Jeep and Mercedes Benz were parked. I was shown where the applicant had left the deceased’s body; inside the Jeep,” Motsepe said.

He also testified that it appeared as though a dumbbell was used to assault Hope.

“The deceased had an injury to the side of the head. It appeared as though a dumbbell was used to hit the deceased as it was found at the scene,” he said.

Mark is facing a charge of murder after his mother was found stuffed in the boot of her vehicle at their Pecanwood Estate in Hart-beespoort in June. As part of his bail conditions, he is to report to De Deur police station in the Vaal area, every day until his matter is concluded.

Hope Zinde’s son suspected in dad’s assault

Pretoria - Two months after being released on bail, murder accused Mark Warona Zinde has found himself behind bars again - this time for allegedly assaulting his father.

The son of the late TV personality and SABC board member Hope Zinde was released on R10 000 bail in September for allegedly murdering his mother.

However, he has now been arrested for allegedly assaulting his father, Lesley Manoto, at his Walkerville home, south of Joburg. Manoto, who took him in after he was released on bail, laid charges of assault against his son at De Deur police station.

He was arrested and appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court, where the matter was postponed to November 28.

Hope Zinde’s son’s murder case postponed

Brits - Mark Zinde, accused of killing his mother, former SABC board member Hope Zinde, appeared briefly in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The case against him was postponed to December 19 when the State intends to apply for his bail to be revoked, following his arrest on a different charge in Gauteng earlier this month.

Zinde was arrested for allegedly attacking his father, Dr Lebohang Manoto, at his Walkerville home, south of Johannesburg. Manoto, who took him in after he was released on R10 000 bail in the murder case, laid charges of assault against his son at De Deur police station.

Mark Zinde's murder, assault cases to be heard jointly

Johannesburg – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday agreed to centralise the cases of murder and assault levelled against Mark Zinde, whose mental state has been under the spotlight.

The 23-year-old accused, who has undergone psychiatric evaluation and treatment is accused of killing his television personality mother, Hope Zinde, and assaulting his father, Dr Lebohang Mohale Manoto, while he was on bail of R10 000.

Mark Zinde allegedly killed his mother in June 2016 at her home in Pecanwood outside Brit and attacked his father with a glass a few months later on 6 November.

Hope Zinde was a former television anchor and board member of the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

The accused's bail has since been revoked and he is being remanded in custody.

Mark Zinde shouts profanities in court

Pretoria – Mark Zinde, who stands accused of murdering his mother, former SABC board member Hope Zinde, shouted profanities at the court on his way down to the holding cells.

Zinde, who appeared to be completely disconnected from court proceedings, shouted: "****ing funny you **** heads, where's that bitch", and then lifted his middle finger toward the bench as he was being escorted down to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria holding cells on Monday morning.

The matter which was supposed to go on trial on Monday was postponed when the attorney for Zinde, Francois Joubert, said they would be bringing an application to have Zinde admitted to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for an evaluation.

Zinde was previously admitted to Weskoppies for psychiatric evaluation for the alleged murder of his mother where four psychiatrists found that Zinde could follow court proceedings, he had a criminal capacity and that he could distinguish between right and wrong.

The new evaluation would not be on the murder charges, but for the attempted murder and assault charges after he allegedly attacked his father, Lebohang Mohale Manoto, in November 2016 while out on bail for allegedly killing his mother.

Zinde's bail has since been rescinded.

Disputing the results of Zinde's first psychiatric evaluation, the defence appointed Dr John Weinkove, a psychiatrist, to make his findings and assessments on Zinde's mental state.

Joubert said Dr Weinkove found that his assessment differed to that of Dr Coetzee at Weskoppies.

"I believe Zinde suffers from schizophrenia with predominantly negative features. I recommend that he should be re-admitted to Weskoppies for a review of his condition," the statement read.

According to Dr Weinkove's statement, Zinde stopped functioning socially about four years ago. This suggested the onset of his mental illness.

"In view of his loss of social and academic functioning, I recommend that he have further investigation in the form of a computed tomography (CAT scan) of the brain and an electroencephalogram (EEG), preferably over 24 hours," the statement read.

In Weinkove's statement, he said there appeared to be a history of similar illness in his father's family. His mother was described as having mood swings – this history could point to susceptibility to schizophrenia.

However, the Brits Magistrate's Court found that Zinde was fit to stand trial.

The four charges Zinde is facing have been centralised. He is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, assault and possession of illegal substances.

Zinde was arrested in June 2016 after his 50-year-old mother's body was found in the boot of her Range Rover at her home in Pecanwood Estate, Hartbeespoort.

At the time, it was reported that a friend had struggled to get hold of her for a few days and that her son had refused to open the door to their home. He only opened it when police arrived.

The application to have Zinde admitted to Weskoppies for another psychiatric evaluation will be heard on Thursday.

Mark Zinde re-admitted to Weskoppies for mental observation

Pretoria – Mark Zinde, who is accused of killing his TV personality mother Hope Zinde, had his provisional court date for Tuesday postponed because he is in hospital.

He was re-admitted three weeks ago at the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria to undergo mental observation for a month.

Zinde has been charged with murder, drug possession, assault, and attempted murder.

The 23-year-old is accused of killing his 50-year-old mother in June last year. Hope Zinde is a former SABC board member, journalist, and television news anchor.

He was subsequently released on R10 000 bail in September, but was re-arrested in November 2016, for allegedly attacking his father, Dr Lebohang Manoto, at his Walkerville home, south of Johannesburg.

Zinde report complete

Mark Zinde, accused of murdering his mother, former SABC board member Hope Zinde, briefly appeared in the high court in Pretoria yesterday, but his trial was postponed to November 6.

Prosecutor Andre Wilsenach told the court that Zinde had been evaluated by a panel of psychiatrists from Weskoppies Hospital and that their report regarding his mental state was ready.

He said the report would be handed to court soon.

It is understood that the case will yet again be postponed and that Zinde will go on trial only sometime next year.

Yesterday was the first time that Zinde appeared in the high court, as he was under observation at Weskoppies for several months.

Zinde, who had, during his previous appearance, shouted obscenities at some of the people in court, appeared calm yesterday.
