Hi,

I'm having a nightmare trying to get Openweb to cancel my ADSL line + data package since May 2016. I signed up with them earlier this year because a friend said he was getting good service and prices weren't bad. Also I saw several advertisements on MyBroadband about their products so figured it should be decent. But my line quality has been horrible on their 4Mbps option and I had to log faults with them almost weekly because I couldn't even open the Google homepage or browse Facebook on my phone. Their official response was that "I should upgrade to a premium line so I could stream Facebook"...still trying to figure out exactly what that means. I then cancelled on the 23 May by filling in their web form and faxing a copy through to them as well (had to consult a historian at a museum to find out what a fax machine is and how our ancient ancestors used them). Now it's August and they still haven't cancelled my line and are still trying to bill me even though I've been with Afrihost since the end of June. I haven't touched their services because I couldn't even get the credentials to authenticate and connect properly anymore mid June. I'm in the process of logging a complaint with ICASA because they refuse to release my line back to Telkom while they try and extort money from me for services which they haven't rendered. I switched to Afrihost end of June and I went from not being able to open my Gmail (they claimed it was a Telkom fault) to being able to download games on my Xbox at 3.85Mbps 30mins later. They truly are the worst ISP and their support staff leave a lot to be desired. E.g. they would reply to an email thread 2 months old with all the details of my cancellation request but then claim to have never received a cancellation request from me. Can anyone offer any advice on how to deal with them and get my line released back to Telkom?

myBB please supply some popcorn for this thread seeing as you are partially responsible for this mess.

take them to ICSA and take myBB to the ASA for advertising the bad service.

open web is the worst out there and myBB keeps spamming us with their partner content, but when a good ISP attempts to get partner content done they get the cold shoulder, and when the CEO of said ISP looses his cool after months of complaining about it, he gets banned.

A fair point since I would not have even considered them if I hadn't seen all the MyBB posts promoting them. Would be nice if I could get some feedback from a MyBB representative. I'm willing to provide the full email threads detailing my 5 months of constant BS dealing with Openweb. Would love to see an article exposing Openweb for who they truly are.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah, sorry dude, Jan and RPM will both see this and decide to do what I should have done, simply stay out of the thread. they know openweb is the worst but they pay well to be featured.

I am sorry it happened to you, but this happened for 2 reasons.
1 the most reliable IT website in SA said openeweb was good because they were paid to.
2 there was no comments on the article or link to a thread in the forum for you to go see how everyone simply tears open web appart when it does happen.

the reputation of myBB has been hurt more by openweb then the amount of clients openweb has lost, and with a community like this the reputation is everything.

Well said. I'm well tired of this ****.

So does rpm simply ignore the issue when called on it? Sounds like he would make a hell of a politician.

Shame on you @rpm.

Advertising is a marketing strategy. Whether myBB chooses to accept or reject money in lieu of advertising space from a Tom, Dick or Harry, is really their prerogative, rightfully so. The legal relationship arises between the product seller and purchaser, consumer. So, if that advertised product is bad and not in accordance with the end-users expectation, it is a contractual matter of rights and duties between that user and that product owner, not myBB. How would it be if every site was obligated to ensure the product he hosts is up to the advertised standard.

The question, therefore, is - what renders the advertising of openweb on myBB morally reprehensible to many on this site?

1. Does myBB have a duty to its members to ensure what they advertise meets expectation, as advertised?
2. Does myBB have conscionable duty to abide by its members' apprehension of a prospective advertiser's product?
3. Does myBB not have the right to earn advertising revenue from whoever they choose?
4. Are advertorials distinct from advertisements, and if so, should myBB rather endorse these with well-placed caveats?

If the answer to any of the above is yes - then the question is, why is it a yes?

1. Is it because myBB is a consumer orientated platform?
2. Is it because people in general view myBB as a consumer champion?
3. Is it because there's a symbiotic relationship between members and myBB?
4. It is because we (members) are inherently well-natured and loathe to see fellow members suffer, in spite of this site's legal right to earn a keep as all other sites do without issue?

As much as I also always bash down the throat of myBB on such issues - the question remains, why does myBB cop such flak?

/I am not vindicating myBB - it's merely a pragmatic stance.

rpm ignores any and all issues when called on them. It's his go-to strategy for conflict resolution.

Well, the users of this very forum continue to use this forum. So there is zero consequence for his inaction. So he gets to keep making profit which is his goal. Why don't the users who are so disgusted with his dictatorship boycott the forum?

Time invested and familiarity, I would assume. It's pretty much the only online community where one can have somewhat civil and sometimes intelligent conversations with fellow Saffers, across just about the entire spectrum of topics. That said, it's certainly not what it used to be; there are many once-valued members who are contributing far less than they once were, and the quality of reporting has absolutely gone to the dogs. Not that anyone cares, as long as the moolah keeps rolling in I suppose. It's only the internet, after all.

Just to update everyone. I took my complaints to the ASA and ICASA. Haven't received a response from the ASA after the auto reply I got. ICASA however passed my complaint along to the NCC who approached Openweb on my behalf while I was in Thailand for the last few weeks. Came back to the news that my DSL line has finally been moved back to Telkom so I can transfer it to a real ISP and they're no longer trying to get me to pay for months of service they never rendered. What's really funny is how they told the NCC that my line is no longer with them and they never tried to bill me after I requested the cancellation. Never encountered a bunch of a-holes who are more full of crap. Just glad it's finally sorted. Thanks again for all the advise you guys provided. Appreciate it
