Hi,

We current have our own linux mail server with about 350 email addresses. Someone has suggested that we move to afrihost hosted packages. Would that be a wise move?

It should be fine. I can't really see why it won't be a wise move but I've never actually used Afrihost's mail servers.

We do use some Afrihost cloud servers and they've gone through a really bad patch where they were down often. Things have gone better over the last couple of months but I wouldn't rate Afrihost that high when it comes to uptime. Maybe their mail servers are better.

If you do make the move just make sure about how much space you get with each mailbox. You wouldn't want a person to go on leave and then her mailbox gets full and emails bounce because of that.

There are also other hosts that you can contact besides Afrihost. Afrihost should be fine though.

Rather go with Hetzner - agree with Soltitude, AfriHost also not great in my experience (similar)

We don't have any issues, new manager. What hosting package would be sufficient?

Are you looking at email hosting as in cPanel hosting, Afrihost's Linux Hosting packages?

did your new manager propose this?
if so he is an idiot with no clue as moving from a stable self managed environment to a shared environment with a company that doesn't have the best rep is bad move.

I love it when managers of people think they can manage systems...

The top email plan Afrihost offers is Platinum Email, which has a 3GB disk quota and allows 250 accounts. Well below your requirements.

Yes, the new manager proposed this but wants us to find what would be the best linux hosting packages. We even invested in power backup so we can be up and running even when load shedding

That bit of information changes things, don't host stuff at your office, ever!

If I were you I'd look at getting cPanel hosting from Web Crew (webcrew.co.za). It's a new company, but I've been working with some of their blokes for a while now and their service is fantastic. Word of advice, don't go for their email packages. It's really good but kinda more expensive than I'd imagine you need. Just opt for normal hosting and you'll be on your way. They offer unlimited email accounts on their cheapest hosting packages, if I remember correctly.

Ah Thor, you know me, I always like posting spam right? ;)
I don't work for web crew, and wouldn't have particularly given a damn if it wasn't for their great service and prices (was with Hetzner for just short of 3 years and not too disappointed). Yes, I know a developer there personally (didn't know that he worked for them until earlier this week, lol), but I feel I'm justified in supporting them on mybb. Just saying :)
