Hi guys, out of curiosity how much would hosting a busy local gaming site cost each month? A website that for instance hosted videos for streaming, audio and pictures? And even a forum?

How much bandwidth would a webiste like that use each month?

Thanks in advance!

Oh and wouldnt it be cheaper to just get a local uncapped account and set up something like server 2008 directly from home on a 4mb line?

Hosting a busy site with streaming videos and audio locally would be prohibitively expensive. And using your ADSL line is impractical, especially if you intend streaming video.

My advice would be to start small with a local host such as Hetzner, and as your site grows and the hosting fees grow with it, find a way to monetize the site to cover these rising costs or move the site overseas.

Or you could find a suitable international host from the get-go .

ya but the thing is, i want to cater for local only / after cap users. There are thousands of gaming sites internationally already, going int isnt really viable for what i want.

that being said, hosting locally is CRAZY expensive. even for local only usage, since i don't think they differentiate

check with rpm what he pays each month for hosting this monster of a forum :D and then quadruple that amount if you want to include videos...

Gaming site should be do-able...but major streaming/video...forget it. Maybe when the undersea cables hit, but not atm.

Hi saffakanera,

If your site is of really good quality, you could have a membership model for say higher resolution videos, access to specific areas, etc.

You're probably going to run dry with local hosting for streaming videos unless you host all content except video streams / downloads locally.

Good luck!
