Guys I've never gone down the road of hosting and I really am not in the mood to research all the options, rather just ask some experts ;)

All I need is a server that runs Linux or Windows and allows lots of BW :D Doesn't need to be especially powerful, needs lots of disk space and it does have to be cheap. Also hosted in the US or UK preferable.

Want something with 99% uptime

If it's a local hosting company that hosts in the US or UK that's fine also, so long as they are cheap. From just a quick google I've already seen that $20 can buy me quite a bit, so no more than R250 per month or $30 please. This box will be hosting private files only.

For the budget, a low end Linux VPS will be an option - most likely an unmanaged one. Windows licencing will kill that budget in its tracks.

Are you looking for a server local in South Africa, or would you accept one in the USA? Our hosting starts at R15 per month, and you'll get unmetered bandwidth if hosted in the USA for that price :) Servers run Linux + cPanel + Softaculous + RVSiteBuilder, or Windows + DotNetPanel + SmarterMail + SmarterStats.

Amplehosting.co.za - Been with them for 3 Years now, Never had any real issues with them, any mishaps are dealt with quickly, without chasing for responses. They also do local and internationally based hosting. They use the Cpanel interface which is FAR better than the Konsole panel that other web hosts make use of.

Yeah, that seems to be the option I'll be going for. I don't need high performance after all, and so long as I have root access I can do everything myself. All they have to do is keep the server running.

www.circle.co.za, prices and support very good

Their prices seem at least reasonable but still more expensive than just hosting with a provider in the US. Don't give 2 ****s about support, unless the server goes down, in which case I don't want so much support as them getting it back up. Installation wise, I've setup servers before, I just didn't organize the hosting.

Your hosting is almost twice as expensive as US based solutions which provide the same specs and they have no setup fees.

R600 for a VPS, LOL. Need I say more?

Thanks to everyone who replied! Seems I'll be using US based Ubuntu VPS.

I am using 2 boxes in Canada, one running windows and one linux windows box is 850pm and linux is 700 or something but these are dedicated hardware boxes with 500gb disk not virtual or shared boxes... go to www.esecuredata.com

Tried hostluck.com referred to by a friend

Dirt cheap and decent service.... a bit slow (hosted international)

But if you want something really cheap and great uptime give em a try

if you're only going to be hosting private files why not use Amazon's S3 service:

First 50 TB / Month of Storage Used $0.150 per GB
Up to 10 TB / month data transfer out $0.150 per GB
http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

Will work you out a lot cheaper and since the replicate the data, there will be no downtime.
and you can choose how you want to access your data.
No access
Access with a token
Publicly readable
and loads more!

Guys thanks for all the feedback. I'm impressed at the replies I've gotten from companies especially! Seems competition in this sector is quite fierce.

I've already got hosting now tho, at least until the end of the month (or rather I got it a few days after my original post). Will hit some of these up as soon as that ends ;)
