www.aplus.net .. I use them ... no hassles so far

They even have a voice help desk free of charge ... :)

Aplus looks really good, amazing what can be achieved with affordable bandwitdh.

Like little kids with no money, we in South Africa can only stand in the street and stick our noses right up against the sweet shop window and dream of the delicacies on the other side, how depressing.
:(

Telkom complain about their international bandwidth consumption, but we are forced to host our sites overseas because of these high prices.

Please post more recommendations guys.

Yes and they are not bad. It's a one man show but at least he is contactable locally if anything goes wrong. I had serious problems with other shared hosting providers in the States when hackers, phishing and mail scammers managed to break into my rented webspace seemingly at will. I would only discover these break-ins when the hosting provider pulled my site. A ding-dong battle would then ensue - they accusing me a breaching my terms of service by running illegal activities from my webspace - me pleading innocence and accusing them of not running secure servers.

The lesson I learnt from using cheap hosting is that you are vulnerable to intrusion when you are sharing the same server with 900 others. I spent a lot of time convincing my hosters to re-activate my site each time my site was compromised. Technically I was in breach of my service agreement, however, I was successfully able to argue that as I did not have ownership permissions to delete the rogue phishing and mail scam folders once they were discovered in my space, the hackers must have come through the server root. I was, on one occasion, able to prove this irrefutably to my then host when I discovered from my logs, the actual rootkit being used as well as the Linux shell commands being employed.

www.lusion.co.za manages his own server in the States from South Africa and thus has control which you will not find in the case with many resellers where the control resides with the main host. If you are running any mission critical site, its imperative that you can sort problems out immediately without being in a situation where your site is down for days while you argue who is culpable.

If you want to host in the USA but have local support, use www.webafrica.co.za. No hassles with timezones or international payments. If you like crowds and trying to phone the niteshift operator thru Skype, host at something like godaddy.com, and share the joy with about 3000 other users on the same server ;-)

webafrica? at those prices? you must be joking! R22/month gets you..wait for it....1MB of space, 1 email addy, 500MB transfer. Even my parking package is higher spec than that for less $$$. WTF is a guy going to do with 1MB of space?

Shameless Plug Follows :o
I also provide international hosting with local billing and support...
Links in my sig...

They are using Windows 2003 Server that's why it's so expensive i guess, but on the other hand it's real secure :-)

You would have to smoke enough zol to kill a troop of elephants to host with WebAfrica at those prices, or any South African host.

Just look at what you get overseas. There are zero benefits to having your site local or through locals anymore, at least nothing that can be quantified when looking at a cost/package/service ratio.

Love that, i was with a overseas host that went under and it was rather inconvienant to say the least.

The proof lays in the pudding. I'm hosting with both www.hetzner.co.za and www.crystaltech.com. Crystaltech has excellent products and service but time difference is a pain when trying to get hold of support. Have you ever tried to update a server with 100MB of files on a Friday evening? International is pulled dead by all the jokers while some of us is trying to do some work. What a pleasure to send Hetzner an email and have support phone you 15 minutes later. Another thing is response time from the servers, ping the local host and you get 18ms back, the US server gives 400ms. Of course it is just the other way around in the US.

It depend mostly on where your target audience is. The local site hosts on-demand audio streaming and 70% of the visitors are in SA. Ozymandias posted a very valid argument further up in this thread, learn from the pros and save yourself a lot of trouble.
