My query relates to a niche (albeit growing) market - people connecting to IRC via their 3G datacard.

In the last week or two, I'm getting assign an IP address, but this IP does not resolve to a hostname. (For example, in the past my IP used to resolve to 196-46-171-246.gprs.vodacom.co.za.)

Some IRC servers (in particular Zanet.org) will refuse a connection if your IP does not resolve to a valid hostname.

Does anybody at Vodacom know if any changes have been made behind the scenes?

uhm.....this is taken from an IP with no reverse-DNS connecting to zanet.net

* *** Looking up your hostname...
* *** Checking ident...
* *** Couldn't resolve your hostname; using your IP address instead
* *** No ident response; username prefixed with ~

Maybe have a chat to zanet.org's admin and ask them why? In my 10+ years of IRC'ing I have never been rejected from a network because of Reverse-DNS not working.

But Vodacom can also fix it - would be nice :)

Laterz !

Reverse DNS lookup

I've been chatting on IRC since 1998 and zanet.org have always stuck with this policy. I'm not about to start aguing with the Opers now :P

I'd like to know why Vodacom is suddenly not providing a fully qualified DNS for an IP. I've had no problems since March, and in the last two weeks something has happened!

Let's hope a Vodacom techie will read this thread...

Can you confirm which APN you use? I assume the internet APN?
