I hope I am putting this in the correct section.

So after almost 5 years in our current house. (now almost 10 years old), we have sold and bought in another suburb.
So this will be 1 of many topics.

Firstly. Our current house electrical was signed off and passed with no hitches. Nothing has changed in the house, but now I am being hit with a R5000 bill to fix things that are not correct. Should this not have been fixed by the previous electrician?

So posted here is the findings that they need fix.

So firstly (A) replace ungraded 4mm jumpers and replace with bus bar?
Need to be done?

Then (B) twin and earth cables? They say is laid incorrect / illegal.

Can I fix it myself? Or are they just trying to make a quick buck?

Thanks in advance

*edit : Argh. Can't fix attachments from phone

I have wood planks in the garage. 2m x 75mm. Could I not put that under the cables to "support" ?

I'd definitely replace those jumpers. You could end up with your entire current going through one - that's nuts.

Why would that twin and earth be illegal?

They said something about it needs to support its own weight or something. Then also I check and they cable tied and neat. So it not a safety issue. (they say can trio on it) all the other small things like loose plug etc I have now fixed.

But Ja. I think they trying to make quick buck as I need the certificate to sell house...

If anyone know a guy that can give me the certificate and check that all been fixed properly in the East London area, it would be appreciated. (I don't mind paying) but not R5k

Haha R5k? I had an electrician in my place a few weeks ago and he quoted me R30k to make my place legal.

So do you guys think if I put planks underneath the twin and earth. Fastened that to the trusses and laid the cable on that. It would then be "supported"?

I think that's a fair price to get it legal considering all the time it would take to fix

So bus bar and neutral sorted. Planks being taken into roof. And while up there, they laying earth cable for dish and geyser.

Is pretty much a scam. They will always find some or other issue but you need to pay to get the certificate. Extortion really.

The jumpers need to be replaced with something like this, http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00uCytngGlHBri/Brass-Terminal-Block-Bus-Bar.jpg. Is that what was put in? I'm rather shocked that the geyser wasn't earthed, probably made an assumption it was earthed through the pipes. Satellite dishes are notorious for not being grounded, sat installers have no legal standards like sparkies to sign their work off against. They should adhere to electrical standards since a dish is a lightning target, but I don't think I've ever seen one haul a ground line to the dish.

Standards have become stricter in the last few years, sparkies have to be specially certified to sign off on installations and they can lose that license if they screw up.

Yes. One of those have been put in. Wil take photo and post difference.

Geyser is strange as it is not copper pipes for water in the house...

So everything on the list I got sorted today and cost me R150 (and help from a friend)

So let's see if these electricians come back and not charge me for it...
