Same story

Pretoria - An armed robber who attacked 12 people in a house in Queenswood, Pretoria, and threatened to shoot them "one by one", shot his own penis off with his stolen firearm.

I loved this part right here :D

Good news like this bothers the ANC, losing electorate in this manner - they'll be pushing even harder to rid the law abiding public of their guns.

yes, becoz the ANC wants people to be shot and the country to only be left with criminals ;) *puts a nice hat on the strawman*

the only thing worth criticising here is that the ANC thinks "no guns = no crime". not "no guns = defenseless ANC opposers"

charge to be self - defence ......

only in south africa

no matter I'll be charged, I prefer to kill those monkeys ..... :D

A lot of countries would charge the person, it's the right thing to do... The law has to be impartial, you can't always assume that the story given is the correct one, then everybody would say it was in self-defense, even the criminals...

It wouldn't be prosecuted further of course, seems like a cut and dry case... Here's my nomination for a Darwin award!!!

do you understand what is "self-defense"?

if you enter my house without my permission, it is sufficient reason for me to kill you without warning!

Actually according to SA law you don't. The intruder has to be physically threatening your life. Just because somebody breaks into your house doesn't mean you need to defend yourself, especially with deadly force. I was once told by a cop that should somebody break into my house I shout shoot them, make sure they die and then just fetch a knife from the kitchen and put it in the dead man's hand. That should get me off. That peoples are fa laws.

New forensic techniques can show if the man was holding the knife or not.

No, that completely wrong, according to law and morally! You can't just shoot people for entering your home, this kind of thinking is exactly the reason government is tightening up on gun laws.

I've seen people take short cuts through my property, people selling stuff enter my property (including walk into my house when I leave the door open), I've had police enter a house I was in without the owners permission (wrong address), ADT jumped over my wall when my alarm went off and I didn't hear the phone call, a neighbour enter my townhouse when the music was too loud at night and I could hear her knock at the door. The worst is that when I was a kid we used to run through lots of property, 'steal' fruit off peoples trees, enter houses under construction etc. I was young, but today's gun happy folk would have shot me and all the people I've gave examples of! You have to met force with equal force, stealing fruit might be wrong but I refuse to believe that I should be shot for it!

I've seen a few of these cases (in my neighborhood, friends and family), one for me was quite bad in that the police officer shot and unarmed drug dealer and then his fellow officers covered up for him by plant a gun in the guys hand. It was quite bad in that the police officer who shot the guy had a clear conflict of interest in that he was a competing drug dealer and had every reason and motive to get rid of the guy... he was cleared after turning on the very officers that helped him, something that still draws fights in the local pubs...

There is a difference between tresspassing and breaking and entering. As far as I am concerned if someone has broken into your home there is no problem with shooting them.

obviously you never understand what is the meaning of "private property"....
or may be your is "public property" :D

all the above except ADT I want to comment,

you contacted with security company, which you already authorized the security personnel to enter your premises without further authorization, you understand that?

There's a couple of scenarios where that wouldn't work though. Firstly, how do you know, when confronted with someone in your house, if they really broke in or just walked in when the door was opened (maybe they entered the wrong townhouse, I've done that before, they all looked the same). Secondly, they could be a kid who thought it was 'cool' just to enter the house, maybe on a dare, this happened a lot when I was a kid, and still happens now. Thirdly, I could easily invite someone that I didn't like over, shoot them, break a window or door and say it was self-defense.

Of course, you are entitled to feel that shooting someone is just punishment for breaking and entering, but this is exactly the kind of mentality we've been trying to root out in our country (and many first world and developing countries).
