Our 8yo is very keen on us buying her one of these things for the birthday in December. I'm rather clueless on what to be on the lookout for regarding hoverboards. This shop seems to have a nice selection.

I'm not looking to get the smallest variant and am thinking of an 8.5" board that is offroad; the larger model being more suitable to adults also riding the thing. Do things like bluetooth and app capability really matter? What other thinks does one need to be on the lookout for?

And lastly: is this a waste of money in that it'll easily end up as a novelty item that is hardly used?

Nice thread as I am also looking for one for my daughter.
I told her to rather walk / run where she wants to go to get the exercise. She wouldn't have any of it.....
:giggle:
I saw one going for R2999 somewhere. Just need to find the link.
I don't think the BT / app etc. is what they looking for. Kids just want to play and enjoy the ride

Takealot has some. Starts from around R2k

Definitely seems like a novelty item to me. How often do you see these things being used in real life? I've only ever seen them in fail videos online.

Maybe offer her an alternative like a surfboard and surf lessons?

I can already see this thing gathering dust in the garage by this time next year.

seems like crazy money for something that seems like a bit of a fad kinda item, i mean where will they use it and how long will it be fun for?

for the same money you could buy them a bicycle or even possibly a small 50cc pit bike

The only way this doesn't end up a novelty item is if more kids also have hoverboards, the same way they have bicycles. It won't work if 1 or a few kids have them; that is recipe for accidents and fights, and a broken hoverboard.

yeah you have a point, i still think though this is a more roll around the driveway/passage for a week kinda toy. bicycles etc are so much more practical., i get though that sometimes it is more about what they want or don't already have, you also can't give them everything though.

Game had this for R2k over the weekend. The popular Zingo brand.
Had a good look at it and read the small print on the box.
The thing that stood out was "can cause death".
Wife freaked when she read this.
Granted that a bicycle can also cause death (and many other toys for that matter). But nowhere on a bicycle box does it say "can cause death"
Needless to say, we are buying a different present.

Oxygen can cause death if used improperly.

I was looking at this. It has bigger wheels which I think is more versatile:

Once they get board get this
