How about: let's discuss cholesterol

Thanks for that.

I wish there was a way to counteract the inflammatory effects that pollution has on once body.
I think the best we can do about this is get in a wide range of antioxidants from various supplements and our nutrition. It's ridiculous how expensive it is to eat healthy and then still add in stuff like NAC, CoQ10, etc.

I was advisted that melatonin besides regulating sleep is one of the best bang for buck powerful antioxidants. The research on it looks solid and very few people seem to know this. Only R145/month.

While supplements can be convenient, I personally prefer to get all of my nutrients from the food I eat. Some supplements may contain unhealthy additives or contaminants, which could potentially cause inflammation or other health issues.

You point about antioxidants is valid though.

It's almost like eskom ... why should we treat the cause and kill the golden goose?

Where do you get a months supply of melatonin for R145?

Statins have been shown to decrease the number of inflammatory cells in atherosclerotic plaques and to possess other anti-inflammatory properties. They have been proven to act as anti-inflammatory agents that slow the progression of disease.

I was paying R440 for 30x 2mg, then our family doc recommended this generic for 1/3 of the price, and 3mg instead of 2mg:

No NAPPI code though, but at this price I'm not phased about medical covering it.

That’s an awesome price, do you feel it works just as well as the branded version?
Its a pity you need a damn doctor’s appointment to get a prescription for melatonin these days.

I've got hereditary cholesterol. Or is it a scam ???? One pill every night. Fck, does those things make me dream schit.

I don't think GP's are the most uninformed, they like EMS (paramedics) are at the point where, if we were to explain to our patients why X and Y blah blah blah - you can clearly see the look on the patients face - they loose interest.

I used to do that often, ask any of my partners or colleagues, I'd try an explain to all my patients but you quickly see how many are not interested - they come to YOU hoping you have the MAGIC 'pill' to take away the issue.

Want to fix the problem YOU must fix it.
If only more patients understood this. Your medical practitioner can only work magic if you do your part. (Modern medicine is amazing, but far from magic)

Try having a conversation (not an internet debate) with the person behind the desk. It usually ends up in a considered interaction. And if it doesn't. Simply go to another medical practitioner, it's all good.

Yeah, I had to make that choice late last year. Q10 specifically. I'd rather put 2 more whole chickens on the table. Or a week's worth of fruit and veg.

At the end of the day, it's supplementary to a good diet, or so I reckon.

While cholesterol itself is not inherently dangerous, it's important to take measures to protect your body from damage and inflammation. According to my research, one of the best ways to do this is by avoiding processed foods and instead opting for a whole food diet. Additionally, it's important to avoid smoking and exposure to pollution to further protect your health.

Changing lifestyle and diet doesn't always work for hereditary cholesterol. My bro in law has the body of a 25 year old at age 45, has done intermittent fasting, LCHF/keto, is a non smoker/drinker and nothing can get his cholesterol below 7-8. He has high triglycerides and LDL as well, not just low HDL.

Only statins seem to bring it down significantly. Last resort.

Same here - except i have the body of a 47 year old at the age of 47.

My Cholesterol was 9, with satins I got it down to about 4.9. Low dosage of 5mg. I refuse to increase the dosage but did so some dietary changes and a great exercise routine.

High triglycerides is definitely a problem.

While statins will definitely reduce his LDL, the question is still if it will increase his health and life span.
