This is a actual case of one of my friends. If you are like him and dont keep tabs on data usage via vodacom4me, then Advanced bundles could solve large data charges.

Description Amount (excl.) VAT Rate Amount
Data Usage R1,655.47 14.0 % R1,887.24
My Gig 1 Once-off R253.51 14.0 % R289.00
My Gig 2 Once-off R341.23 14.0 % R389.00
My Gig 1 Contract R306.14 14.0 % R349.00
HSDPA Voice Tariff R0.00 14.0 % R0.00

TOTAL excl. VAT R2,556.35
TOTAL VAT R357.89
TOTAL incl. VAT R2,914.24

R1887.24 / R1.20 (your current out of bundle rate) = 1572 MEGS

RECALCULATE IF YOU WERE ON ADVANCED MYGIG1 :

1572 MEGS X R0.38 (OUT OF BUNDLE RATE IS SAME AS IN BUNDLE RATE ON ADVANCED DUNBLES) = R597.26

Saving that would have been made = R1289.98

Here's an even better way!

-Step 1: buy a prepaid sim = R2
-Step 2: Recharge
-Step 3: When cap depleted, load another.

Yip...I also use prepaid (via my Top Up contract), but the reason why I posted the above is to show a real world example of how a Advanced bundle could be usefull for people that dont want to worry about having to top up etc etc.

It wont save the likes of me. :( Interesting comparison though. ;)

Thanks OC. I still feel like I did back when these were announced that it would not have hurt Vodacom to have just done this to the existing bundles (i.e. IB = OOB). That way we would still have 1 bundle type to choose from, no-one would have to worry about OOB, we'd all be on a 3.6 profile and 7.2 could be a VAS. Much simpler IMO!

There are very few who would pay for the 7.2, considering that very few would actually be able to get that consistently.

As have been mentioned numerous of times by VodacomData, the main point of a Advanced data bundles are not the 7.2mbps, but the data rates. The 7.2 is kind of just a extra thrown in. I would not recommend Advanced data for just anyone as it is more expensive. But once again, the case mentioned above is a good example of a real world scenario where the advanced data bundle really could be of benefit to someone. The billing above is pulled from a friend of mines proposed invoice for this month. I have now done a migration for him to get him onto the Advanced 1GIG. Will see how it goes.

Also gonna update his E220 with the new firmware so that he can uitilize the 7.2....but have explained to him that this is not why I am putting him on the Advanced bundle....but seeing that the 7.2 profile is included in the Advanced bundle, we might aswell enable his modem to make use of it.

ADB actually helped a client he did like R5000 OOB and did like 20gigs+- or something of downloading.... true story

those are estimates

1. Why it was ever called "Advanced" and not "Flat-rate" is still beyond me as there is absolutely nothing advanced about it.
2. VodacomData undertook to take the case for reduced IN-BOUNDLE rates above 2Gb to the powers months ago... If the cost/Mb for the so-called Advanced data bundles can reduce above 2Gb, why not for normal bundles too?

And it will make me feel more at ease also....now I wont have to check on the system every 2-3hours what he is getting up to. I turn my back for a day and he goes and downloads R800.00 worth of out of bundle data! hehe. Now he can just download to his little hearts content and be charged the same lower rate and I dont have to worry. Sjoe...what a relief :-)

Sorry to be an ignoramus but what is the definition of an advanced data bundle?

I am currently buying ad-hoc Mygig1 bundles and trying desperately to catch them once depleted so that I can disable/er-enable them... the best I have managed in a month is to keep my out of bundle spending to R60.

I am convinced that the system is set up to shaft me - inaccurate/out of date usage data plus cumbersome system that does not allow you to enable an already enabled bundle means you will be spending out of bundle.

Any tips / advice could literally save me thousands of rands.

A Advanced data bundle will give you the same OOB rate as the in bundle rate. So, if you are on the MyGig1 Advanced data bundle, you will be charged R0.38 per meg instead of the higher out of bundle rate as with the standard data bundles. Please see my calculation above as this explains it. Vodacomdata, you have a better way of explaining it?

If this is the definition and there is no difference in price the why...WHY I ASK YOU WITH TEARS IN MY EYES!!! is there even a choice?????

Who would seriously not choose this?????

Honestly Vodacom: Playing politician - double talk and ambiguity in your billing does nothing to ingratiate you to your subscribers.

IMO Vodacom should just make the advanced option to be a standard option and kill the "standard option". The pricing should be adopted from the standard option. This way it Vodacom will be giving it's customers value for money. :D

I still think that the biggest mistake that Vodacom made with ADBs, was to include the '7.2 feature' on the list of advantages that ADBs have over the SDBs.

The inclusion of 7.2 causes people to buy an ADB for the 7.2 and not for the OOBR == IBR, and OOBR == IBR should be the only reason to consider buying an ADB.

ADBs were originally suggested [IIRC v3g credited me with that suggestion :o] as a solution to various issues with SDBs without having to change SDBs - primarily from a stability POV of not wanting fix something that technically is not broken whilst SDBs are being used by thousands of Vodacom's customers. So, the logical solution is to introduce a new product that is mainly a copy of the SDB product, but has some changes - like OOBR == IBR. This new product can then be developed and tested without breaking SDBs.

The problem for Vodacom, is that we the consumers got a taste for PPDBs and we effectively changed our thinking in the time that Vodacom took to implement ADBs.

Having posted that, I still recommend PPDBs [and I vehemently shoot down CDBs] when people ask me about data bundles [Vodacom or MTN], but ADBs are available to both pre-paid and contract [Vodacom] customers, and ADBs are a sensible choice for some of Vodacom's pre-paid customers.

ADBs do obviously add another layer of complexity for the uninformed, and that is a bad thing, but I think Vodacom should improve its marketing as well as train the front lines to properly explain the differences between SDBs and ADBs.

@VCD, o/t I know, but what is the status of Vodacom's project to implement realtime data usage monitoring for CDBs, and what is Vodacom doing to implement DataSIM on TopUp contracts?

I can't see how ADBs could be a sensible choice for pre-paid customers.

As they now stand, ADBs are only a sensible choice for contract customers who regularly exceed their bundle by 10% or more.
