I was wondering, how big is a download server. do they have lots of hard disks, or a very big one.
and why would someone like avg, when you download a file, move you to a download server like cnet.
how does the download server makes money, ie like tucows.
Thanks

haha.... there isn't really one server... there are many. In fact, they are called "Server Farms" :)

There are racks and racks of hard drives all linked to multiple servers.

When you request to download a file, the server side software hands you off to one of the free ports to download the file.

Companies like Akamai, and smaller ones like Softpedia, Tucows or MediaFire make money through advertising and hosting fees. They charge the hosting company to hold their files for them and they advertise on the page where you grab the file from.

Why, you thinking of building one? :D

Gad, I nearly choked now. :D

I was eating ice cream, idly clicking though posts...thought, mmm what the hell, let me see what one of our "South African server farms" look like...

I'm still coughing! :)

LOL...

Gary, also don't forget the SAN storage, fibre connections etc.
