Spoke to Telscum and as usual they are about as helpful as ..... never mind.

From what I can establish this is my setup.

Brief overview. I contacted Telkom who said my exchange has been upgraded to 10 Mbps.

Exact reply:

Hi, upgrade from 4 - 10 Mbps has been done but because you are to far from the main exchange that is why can can only get 4 Mbps.

I then asked if I would ever get 10 Mbps and was told:
Hi, Telkom is in the process of upgrading exchanges but we are unable to say when and if it will happen.

Now this confuses me. How is upgrading the exchanges going to help? Surely the connection from the mini DSLAM to the exchange needs to be updated i.e. fibre. Then the mini DSLAM needs to be upgraded to support 10 Mbps.

Not so?

Depending on your exchange area...

The "mini-DSLAM" will be replaced with a MSAN, which is linked back to a central office (no longer called an exchange) via optic fibre.

Dependant on your distance from the MSAN you could get up to 40Mbps VDSL service (especially if you are 300m away from it).

I presume you are on a UMC (which are 4 meg )
Thay are in the process of changing the UMCs to MSAN/ISAMs so when that is done you will probibly get 10 meg or more.

If you are connected to that then it's happy days! That is a new MSAN with the SDC (blue/green box) next to it. It's probably not fully commissioned yet. Can you get close enough to the lighter coloured cabinet to see the code on it? eg WMEO 02

Be grateful that you have an ADSL line at home.

Unfortunately that isn't an MSAN I have seen thise I believe they were used for carrying fibre closer to UMC units but I know fir a favt that isn't an MSAN.

4.5KM from Exchange to DSLAM is really pushing it for 10Meg

Can someone explain why fibre optic's across oceans can carry Petabytes of data a second and 4.5km away suddenly means you can only get 4Mbps. Sorry I just really don't understand this if someone could enlighten me

Here is s better picture. There are zero markings on the white box though.
