a long time ago in a far away land i worked for a bike dealership when the zzr1100 came out.
you will be surprised to see how far the cops will go. they came round to our dealership, got a list of all the zzr's we had sold and figured out who lived where, and who worked where, and they found the bloke like that. they would go to all the bike shops in the local area and do the same, slowly eliminating people. never underestimate the determination of a government employee who gets paid irrespective of results...these blokes would come back two months later with more info etc until they found their man. i think they took it personally
we have also had cases where they came in to get us to help identify a bike...i.e. via colour scheme, shape of mirrors etc...
oh , look, a 1989 gsxr-750, etc...and from there a trip to the licensing offices to find out who owns them.
there is safety in numbers, but when you have the only superbike in that colour scheme registered in that year for 200km's area then you dont have any numbers to hide you. you just stand out.
distinctive helmets can also aid in identification.
there were times when we just point blank didnt know who the rider was, or what bike it was. not from incompetence but because it was my brother, or one of his tjommies, or one of our good customers.
