Always had a crappy phone, only used it for calling.

But I now find myself with a less crappy phone and doing important stuff on it. I want to figure out how to make it fully trackable, if I were to ever lose it or if gets stolen. I want to be able to know where the last known position was.

Which OS?

I installed the eSet security suite. You set up trusted numbers and a password, then you can sms your phone and it will sms back location etc. You can also remote lock, wipe, set off a siren etc.

Also, google tracks your location history.

If SIM card is replaced, SMS will not reach your phone.

Android phone is easy. Open chrome and type "where's my phone" in the address bar. Enter.

EDIT: or even better, go to the play store and track it from there. From the play store you can even wipe it remotely.

If you have a Android phone with the latest Google update, you dont have to install anything you just have to be logged into your Google account on the device. You can then use any other device that has a browser(it does not have to be Chrome), go to Google search page and type "find my phone " it will ask you to log into your Google account and show you on Google maps where your phone is.

The best app I've seen thusfar, and seen it in action in Africa, is the Avast app for mobile. Friend's phone rocked up in Zambia two months later, and he got an sms from the new number along with coordinates.

Proactive Anti-Theft:
Control Your Missing Phone Via my.eset.com
Rely on nifty features that help you protect and find your phone in case it goes missing.
Proactive Anti-Theft It acts when it detects suspicious behavior. If incorrect Screen lock (PIN, pattern, password)
or unauthorized SIM is inserted, device gets locked and snapshots from phone cameras are
automatically sent to my.eset.com. The*information includes the*phone‘s location, current IP address,
inserted SIM details and other data. The user can mark the device as missing at my.eset.com and start
Location tracking or send Custom on-screen Message or even Wipe the device contents.

Rather Proactive Bu3$1t.
What if unauthorized SIM has no data access? What if hard reset is applied? Right, here is solution: root the phone to survive hard reset, run the app in kernel mode, it will allow third party access to all your personal data, not only location. Well, it is going deeper and deeper...

I would rather accept loses or pay insurance, but keep all your personal data in heavy encrypted vault. This is proactive approach.
