How do I set up the MyWireless USB modem through a router?

OK Guys, here's the thing:

I just got an uber PC to play Oblivion on, and it's an AMD 64 x2. This of course makes Sentech freeze the PC after a while (only when I'm online).

I'm sure the solution is to run the USB modem through a router (hopefully a wireless router so I can use it as an access point to surf the net on my PSP)

The problem is that I only have 1 PC, and have no idea what router to buy, or how to set up this whole operation once I've bought it.

Can I plug the USB modem directly into a router, and then the router into my single PC. Do I not need an old PC to run sentech and then connect to that via ethernet?

Please guys give me all the information that you can on what to buy, and what to do exactly once I've bought it. Also please bear cheapness in mind since after buying the UBer PC for Oblivion I am a massively indebted dude

Hi, the simple answer is no, you need a modem Ethernet cable that has an RJ45 connector on it and a route that is capable of supporting pPPoE on a port.

My father used a Belkin A+G wireless router but encountered a problem between the P1D and the Router. The Router would only run its port at Full Duplex when the modem will only handle half Duplex. To get around the problem he put a small auto-sensing switch or hub between the router and the P1D wireless modem. But problem took time to Diagnose.

You then have to configure the Port to user PPPoE on the Router is sends out your User ID and password in the same was as the PC does when it initiates the connection.

I would suggest that you consider looking at a DLink. Hope this helps.

hmmm, that FAQ makes it seem that a lot of luck is involved trying to make a successful pppoe connection.
You'll need the proprietary MyWi ethernet cable and a router (I'm running of a Linksys WRT54G (as per my sig). Nothing could be easier, even I could do it

One little warning, the Linksys WRT54G version 5 gives issues with the sentech modem. There is a beta patch available though, to get it working.

The WRT54GS is the new name for the trusty old version and a much better choice than the new WRT54G.

The MODEM through a router, yes, the modem through USB, that'd be a resounding "NAFC" ..err.. "no".

Some "problem" ..see above. As to what to buy: the Linksys WRT54GL is (a)an absolute doddle to setup (b)will give you the love to both your PC and PSP separately that you so (desperately?) desire. Possibly NB caveat: unless my memory is terribly out of date the PSP supports only wireless-B, which means at best WEP wireless security, no WPA-love for you! However this need not be a show-stopper, Steps Can Be Taken(tm) to minimise the risk.

If you're feeling cheap/broke/(hugely) adventurous (on account of spending all your dosh on that uber-PC), this is a viable alternative. You'd want:
- said old PC
- if you want wi-fi for the PSP, a Linux compatible PCI WLAN card
- time, possibly lots.
- no small amount of being able to figure the system out. On the one hand they do mostly spoon-feed you for settings, OTOH this does mean at least some knowledge of networking-type stuff.
- as an alternative to the above: a "persuadable" buddy- consider adding (crates) of beer to your costing.

OPINION: I suggest going with IPCop instead of SmoothWall (for the Linux firewall distro's) as they've specifically worked in the option of a wireless segment. SW *may* have a wi-fi segment capability but it'd mean more having to hack it in than the IPCop route. Also consider m0n0wall (for a BSD-based option) as they also specifically have a wireless segment catered for.

Mostly 'splained above. But, for the ADD among us an executive summary:
option 1
- buy a WRT54GL, costs range from around R700-R900 depending on how 1337 your shopping-fu is.
- buy the modem Ethernet cable, cost is/should be R225.
- connect A to B, introduce your PC and PSP to your router and get on with your life.

option 2
- dig up old PC.
- (possibly) buy a Linux/UNIX compatible PCI WLAN card
- EITHER
..... buy modem Ethernet cable and stay with go with the distro's standard setup OR
..... stay with USB and hack it to work with RoDent's Linux USB driver (no idea of whether there's a USB driver for UNIX)
- spend possibly LARGE gobs of time futzing with this mess instead of Oblivion or your PSP.
- consider having sedative pills/booze on hand to manage frustration levels!

Also please bear cheapness in mind

option 2 has the definite possibility to flat-out cost you less money, but at the expense of time (and maybe sanity) ..and loss of time with the toys you've gone to so much cost to REALLY play with.

..agreed, the v5 was heavily lobotimised as a cost-saving exercise by Cisco. Agreed, too, that there's a beta patch to get around the problem. However, BrainSlayer of DD-WRT fame has managed to hack his way into even these dumbo boxen, see here (linksysinfo.org)

..sorry, that'd be a "no". The ~GS is, and has always been, a different (and higher up the foodchain) model than the ~G models. See this Wikipedia page for the definitive breakdown of what's what in the WRT zoo. But, for the new-link-lazy the WRT54GL (v1) is the direct replacement for the WRT54Gv4 ..well, it's actually the same thing, just with a new model/ range number.

Awesome help guys! Unfortunately the Old PC option will be more expensive since I gutted it of HDD's and RAM for the new PC. Sadly the router route looks like it'll be about 1000 bucks... out of my league until I banish the Credit Card Demon from my life.

However!! Earlier today I updated the dialler software and the modem firmware, in the vain hope of the ultra cheap solution that requires the least work.

I then connected, turned on a Torrent (which has thus far been the ultimate machine freezing procedure), and went and had some lunch. I got home just now and the Torrent was complete and the PC was still online and alive! I am in fact online now and there hasn't been any freezing.

I'm really hoping that my cheap ass driver fix might've done it. I really don't wanna buy anything else for this cash hungry beast.

Thanks a million for your help guys. When the PC hangs later, after lulling me into a false sense of confidence, I'll post and let you know.
