I got this hub, I insert a cable from the cisco server, the port led comes up. When plugging in the computer cable in another port , that port led comes on and the router led dies. The computer have no network, and then the lan is dead from the cisco. After restarting the cisco the network is up again. How do one test a hub, or must I simply throw it away. Hope my explaining makes sense.

It is a hub, firstly, and it seems to be faulty in that it only keeps 1 port alive. See if you can get a couple of rands for scrap.

The device is a Cnet 8port switch. Sorry, this thing is like a splitter/combiner for network cables. Hope you forgive me for calling it a hub. Will have to ask Google what a hub is.

It's a switch, not a hub. That's in the name. Hubs came before switches. They're very different things from a functional point of view.

Strange things, you have to restart Cisco. I would test Cisco with another 'hub' before making conclusions.

A hub in 2018...lol

Actually there's one use case when I've needed a hub before, and that was to try and build something that monitor the bandwidth usage all internet traffic on a home network (since hubs route all packets to all endpoints) without having to buy enterprise level switch/router.

Nice, come to think of it I never did manage to get a solution working even after weeks of hair pulling.
(wanted to turn a Raspberry Pi & it's touch screen into an "Internet usage meter" for the entire home network)
