How do I use gmail as an email backup? SOLVED

I currently have an mweb email address with 4 aliases. I want to forward all these to my gmail account as a backup in case I lose any mails.
Mweb allows me to forward only my primary address to another account. Is there a way that I can set up gmail to d/l all my aliases as well?

Yes you can.

Gmail - Settings - Accounts - Get mail from other accounts - Add a mail account you own - fill in the details

Another nice feature is to setup filters. i.e.to "trap" certain e-mails and either place it in a certain folder or to simply delete it.

Um...aliases are simply redirectors, not mailboxes. Where are those addresses routing the mail to? That's what you'd want to forward the mail to GMail from.

Extra e-mail addresses have unique username / password combinations and thus separate mailboxes.

Aliases, as per mweb and others' definition, use the same authentication details and thus share the same mailbox.

In other words the alias dick@mweb on the account mary@mweb would have all the mail for the two addresses in the same mailbox, accessible with the same username & password.

An extra email account set up with a new username & password jane@mweb would require a unique password, different to dick and mary.

Log in to your account at mweb, it's all pretty clear.

Edit: So the distinction must be made in your OP: Are you talking about aliases or extra email addresses?

If the mail is being redirected from another server, then pretty much in real time:

Boing! mail arrives at mweb. Boing! Mail goes off to Google. Boing! Mail drop in your Gmail box. Boing! You've got mail.

but I am not forwarding from mweb as I cannot forward my aliases. I have set up my aliases as additional email addresses in gmail only. Mweb email forwarding is off.
from Mweb's email forwarding setup:
"PLEASE NOTE
You can only forward e-mail from your primary e-mail address. This is the e-mail address you use to connect to MWEB. You cannot forward e-mail from any of your extra e-mail addresses or aliases."

Please check that the forwarding e-mail address is correct - you will not receive your e-mail if you supply an incorrect forwarding address. "

Oh, I see now. How often does Gmail get mail from other servers? Again, the answer's the same: pretty much in real time.

Gmail retrieves email from POP accounts at least once every hour afaik. So not that real time.

I was only guessing from my own experience. I often have to send mail here and there, testing accounts, and it all seems to do the rounds pretty quickly. I don't know what their actual setup is, to be sure.
